Unit 4: Play
In the article, One Art Teachers Search for a Holistic Approach, Virginia K. Freyermuth, she
talks about how there can be different approaches to teaching art. She also talks about how it is
possible for teachers to teach the holistic ways and how they can still meet the required
standards. The author gives many examples of what she thinks is necessary of a teacher of
Holistic Art Education but one of the things Freyermuth (2012) states is how it provides
opportunities for choice on the part of learners that is appropriate to their developmental needs.
This units big idea is play. In the article, Engaging Learners Through Art making: Choice-based
Art Education in the classroom by Katherine M. Douglas and Diane B. Jaquith, they explain four
different practices that define the educational scope, which is personal, pedagogical, classroom,
and assessment. These practices form the structure of choice-based art. Katherine M. Douglas
and Diane B. Jaquith(2009) use a chart that finds a balance between direct teachings and
stepping back allows students more autonomy. There is one choice that is modified choice that
states teachers chooses content, student chooses media or the other way around.
When I become a teacher, I would use modified choice because I feel like it would be fair for the
teachers and students to both have a choice. I would be more flexible with what I teach and make
sure that the students are interested and are also being taught what they need to know. I would
make sure theyre engaged with the activity and sometimes have some fun doing what they think
is play.
