Unit Paper 5
In the 10 Lessons the Arts Teach by Elliot Eisner, it talks about how art can influence a
students life. Out of the ten lessons, the 6th one was my favorite one. Eisner (2002) states that art
teaches students that small differences can have large effects. In chapter six from A whole new
mind: Why right-brainers will rule the future by Daniel H. Pink, he talks about the idea of
symphony connects to art. Pink (2006) states that people must know how to link unconnected
elements to create something new. What both ideas have in common with the idea of standards-
based approach is that students are given the opportunity to create new possibilities thanks to art.
As a future teacher, I really liked all the ten lessons Eisner talked about and would like to
use that in my classroom. The 6th lesson really was my favorite because I can personally relate to
it. Taking this class and doing the small art activities helped me release stress even though I
knew nothing about art. I hope that my students will be able to be comfortable in my classroom
and allows themselves to try new things whether its art related or not. The state standards are
always going to be there and as a teacher its up to us how we want to teach them to our students
