Sweet Dreams

Haley Martino, Bryce Bright, Hanna Martino

Introduction: Our report is about the total amount of hours you sleep at night
and how it affects GPA percentage during the school year. We collected data on
how many hours someone slept during the night and seen what their GPA
percentage was during the school year. Our hypothesis includes the statement in
which if a students sleeping habits decrease, then their GPA percentage will
decrease, and if a students sleeping habits increase, then their GPA percentage
will also increase because their getting more amounts of sleep to help them
concentrate during school. We predict our direction of the correlation will be
positive, and the indicated strength will be moderate.

Data Set: Population- An entire group of individuals being studied.

Our population for our project is the students who we asked about how many
hours they sleep a night and what their GPA percentage is during school.

Sample- A part of the population from which we actually collect data.

Our sample of our project is basically the whole thing. We collected GPA
percentages and found out how many hours a student sleeps a night.

Variable- Any characteristic of an individual

The explanatory variable (X) is defined as how many hours a student sleeps at
night. The response variable (Y) is defined as the GPA percentage of a student
during the school year.

Interpretation

Correlation- describes the direction and strength of a straight line relationship

between two quantitative variables. Correlation is usually written as r.

Our correlation value is -0.000055. The direction of the scatter plot is negative,
while the strength of the plot is weak because the points are not close to the line.

Coefficient of determination- The fraction or percent of the variable in the values

of y that is explained by the least- squares regression of y and x. Also known
as r squared)

Our coefficient of determination is 0.011. The variation is 1.1%, and the equation
is not valid, its too low.
Prediction- I predict that for 6 hours the GPA would be 90.7%. The coefficient of
determination explains the variation to be very weak because its 1.1% so its a low
variation.

1) y=-.005+.877
2) y=.005(6) +.877
3) y=.03+.877
4) y=.907

Lurking Variables- The lurking variables are (9, 77.571) and (6, 70.00) they are the
lurking variables because of how far they are away from the regression line. It
affects the scatterplot by dragging it lower.

Conclusion- If a students sleeping habits decrease, and then their GPA will
decrease. If a students sleeping habits increase then their GPA will increase as
well. Our hypothesis is incorrect because we stated that the direction of the
regression line would be positive, and the strength we predicted would moderate
but its incorrect because the regression line is weak.
