Description of the problem

Overview

Every day, individuals are being told that they are not as good as the person next to them.

There is a constant comparison from oneself to another. This leads to lower confidence,

decreased mental wellness, and less self-love. All of these components put together harm society

by drilling in young minds that they need to work harder at being better. When people think of

the phrase body positivity, they may not even know what to think or what it means. There are

issues women and men face with feeling objectified or not good enough to feel comfortable in

their own skin. TrueSkin aims to empower all people to live healthier lives free from the burden

of self-hate. There is a growing need for people to talk about the social issues of comparisons

between individuals at any age and the tolls that it takes. There is no telling what a person can do

once they realize and embrace the person they were created to be. Submerge yourself in the

freedom of self-love and discover the beauty.

Strengths

The biggest strength that I will have in the project will be my own journey in fighting

stigmas that fat girls are not worthy. Through my own life, I have been affected with the issues

that come along with being judged by others. Now that I have the benefit of hindsight, I

understand that the criticism I faced as a young girl was because individuals were conditioned by

society to believe that it was okay to comment on my weight. My passion is for other women and

men to realize that they know their worth from their own opinions and no one elses. This issue

is not one that just I have experienced. Another great strength, besides my experience and

passion, is that there are many individuals have expressed interest in the message that TrueSkin

will send to young adults through the Awareness Week. The last listed strength is the Womens

3
Leadership Project on Fort Hays State University campus. They see the ramifications that could

come from body shame and would be able to offer up suggestions and resources.

Weaknesses

With every challenge, there are weaknesses that add obstacles trying to lead to failure.

Addressing those weaknesses up front will allow for ease of addressing them. The greatest

weakness of this project is not knowing the level of interest that the community might have.

There is a stigma that goes with insecure people. Individuals mostly want to appear confident

even when they are not and if they do not believe they deserve to be treated better, they will not

want to attend. With that being said, another weakness is that I am not an expert. I am unable to

tell people how to live their lives perfectly that they never have any doubts about themselves as a

person.

Opportunities

Empowering individuals to have transformed lives of self-love will be the greatest

opportunity that will come out of the TrueSkin Awareness Week. With this new self-

empowerment, awareness of these issues will be brought to the light and passed by word of

mouth. Along with this, a stronger bond with the Womens Leadership Project will be created.

By both campaigns working on the same team, there is potential for great success lined up to

reach as many young adults as possible. Also, through the collaboration, individuals will be able

to learn how the issues overlap with one another. There will also be an opportunity for students

to receive resources if they feel the need to get educated further or need counseling.

Threats

Threats to a project are often not wanted during the planning process. For the TrueSkin

Awareness Week, a threat could be that there will be no organizations that wish to partner with

4
TrueSkin. This could lead to no sponsorship for the project to be successful. Also, individuals

may not be interested in the project and potentially scrutinize me for my thoughts. There is a

huge chance for lack of support from the community and crucial stakeholders. If there is no

participation for the project, my voice as a leader will not be heard.

Attempts

There have been attempts through other organizations on campus to address this issue.

Specifically, the Womens Leadership Project works to educate woman and inspire them to lead

others and make their mark on society. They do this through several avenues to encompass topics

and activities that could interest many people in more than one way.

Also, this issue has had many attempts to be addressed all over the world. People can

hold projects and campaigns to battle the issue our culture has engrained in us. The trouble is that

there are many ways to tell women and men they do not need to change to look perfect for

society to accept them. However, once that person feels it in their soul that they are free to love

themselves without judgement, they can work towards living a healthier life.

Possible Consequences

The possible consequences that could happen are that depression in young adults could

increase dramatically. Depression is a serious issue that many do not think is a reality. Anxiety,

stress and loneliness could also increase. Once these factors increase, it could cause a ripple

affect into destroying friendships and relationships. Jobs and academic life could suffer greatly

for lack of self-confidence. By understanding these consequences, I understand the risks

involved and how they are all interconnected and vital for society to recognize.

Vision Statement

This year, 2020, TrueSkin is setting up for the 3rd annual TrueSkin Awareness Week on

Fort Hays State University campus. This organization has had great success from the first year in

2017. The project has been refined to integrating more elements that allow for young adults to be

more interactive and learn what goals they can reach through self-love. Since this is the 3rd

annual event, there is a growing list of organizations in the community that are wanting to get

involved. Several students who have attended the TrueSkin Awareness Week in the past have

taken leadership positions to plan and host the event to be bigger and better than ever. Each year,

a new service project is added to add variety. The organization is grounded in the idea that by

helping someone else, there is a sense of fulfillment and self-worth rising.

There is also an increasing number of men that attend the Awareness Week. In the

beginning, there was great concern that men do not think these issues apply to them. However,

men are just as involved as women are at this point. The talking points have become much more

defined each year. The focus is not just on body weight, but also height, abilities, sexual

orientation, race, and facial traits. The beliefs of TrueSkin are that any person of any background

has the right to be comfortable in their own, unique, and TrueSkin.

For the biggest change happening next year, 2021, TrueSkin will be opening another non-

profit location in College Station, Texas. This is where the founder of TrueSkin, Kaylie Towles,

is living and looking to reach lives across the nation. Awareness about the way cultures judge

everyone will be a topic discussed regularly. As the process continues, there is great hope for the

momentum of this project to pick up speed and show people the strength they have by loving

themselves and being courageous.
