Descriptive Storytelling

Objectives:
Students must be able to verbally describe a storys characters, settings, and major events.
Student should build their communication and social skills by working in groups.
Student should increase their ability to describe a storys setting and characters in detail.
Content Standards: 1st Grade Reading Standard Describe characters, settings, and major
events in a story, using key details.
Materials: Props, costumes, scenery (students can create background scenery in class as an art
project.)
Description:
The students will be placed into two large groups.
The teacher will begin by telling or reading a story to the whole class.
After the story the class will have a discussion in which the characters are enumerated
and described, the plot is reviewed, and the scenes are planned.
Each group of students will be instructed to act out a specific scene from the story.
Each group will be instructed to decide which characters are necessary to the plot, which
ones could be eliminated, or whether other characters should be added.
After the first group scene is finished, the whole class will participate in a discussion that
evaluates the 1st groups performance. The discussion can be guided with questions such
as:
Did the players tell the story how you remember it?
Was anything important left out?
What did you like about how the group began the story?
Did you understand the ending?
If the group redid the scene, what might you add, change, or leave out?

The 2 group will perform the same scene.
After the 2nd performance, the whole class will participate in a discussion that evaluates
the 2nd groups performance, and the story itself. The discussion can be guided with
questions such as:
Who were the people in the story?
How were the characters in the story similar/different than us?
How did their home environment (school environment) differ from
ours?

Follow-up Activities: The teacher can instruct students to write a paragraph describing the
characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
Assessment: The teacher can assess each paragraph to gage the students ability to describe
characters, settings, and major events in a story.
Did the student describe the characters using key details?
Is the reader able to visualize the setting from reading the students
paragraph?
Did the student indicate the major events of the story?
