lot May 20-21.
But the Verona Area High
School group holding its
Camp Out to Stamp Out
focused on hunger and pov-
erty does hope you stop by.

and how they can help, said
VAHS teacher Jason Knoll,
who leads the VAHS Aid
group.
VAHS Aid, formerly Vero-
na Aid, is a group of students
that formed in 2015 to bring
more community aware-
ness to worldwide issues of
hunger and poverty. Since
its founding, the group has
hosted supply and clothing
drives, but the camp-out is
its most public event yet, he
said.

idea, which will include three

topics of child poverty, food
insecurity and the United
Nations Sustainable Devel-
opment Goals, along with an
opportunity to donate to two

ger Prairie Needs Network
and the Wisconsin Council
on Children and Families.

the causes or purchase items

Knoll said they also plan to

ership his students have tak-
en on through this event and
the year as a whole.
Just to see the students
thinking about different ways
to help others in the com-
munity, for me as a teacher,
thats what its all about,
Knoll said. Thinking glob-
ally, and then taking action
locally. This is proof positive
that works.

Parents asked to monitor
viewing of controversial
new Netflix series
13 Reasons Why
depicts teen suicide

The Verona Area School
District asked parents
Tuesday to take caution in
letting their children watch
a recently released Netflix
series that involves teen
suicide.
VASD superintendent
Dean Gorrell sent a let-
ter to families Tuesday
explaining the show 13
Reasons Why, based on a
novel, and asking parents
and guardians to closely
monitor if their children
are watching this series or
others of the same nature.
Producers of the show
hope the series helps those
who may be struggling
with thoughts of suicide,
Gorrell wrote. The series
is rated for mature audi-
ences, however it is being
watched by children and
teenagers without adult
guidance and support.
The show revolves
around a 17-year-old who
kills herself and leaves
behind audio recordings
for 13 people that were
part of why she took her
own life, each recounting
a painful event. The letter
said the tape graphically
depicts the suicide and
addresses topics like bully-
ing, rape and drunken driv-
ing in graphic detail.
Gorrell cites five spe-
cific concerns in the let-
ter, including the poten-
tial of the show to trigger

reality and that the series
is not developmentally

reinforce the importance
of families closely moni-
toring what their children
are watching, Gorrell
wrote.
He added, though, that
the series also creates an
opportunity to raise aware-
ness of the signs of suicide
and share resources that
are available to parents.
Gorrell mentions the
Suicide Awareness-Voices
of Education and Ameri-
can Foundation for Suicide
Prevention as example
organizations, suggesting
that parents look for warn-
ing signs from their chil-
dren and dont be afraid
to ask if they have thought
about suicide or if some-
one is hurting them.
The letter also included
a list of student services
contacts in the district,
including social workers,
school psychologists and
school counselors.
I hope this message
provides you with infor-
mation to assist you in
handling this situation
as a family, but also raise
awareness of the sensitive
issue of youth suicide and
prevention, Gorrell wrote.

Word on the Street 5K
run and walk will be held

from the event will benefit
the Verona Public Library
Endowment Fund.
The chip-timed course
will begin and end at the

flowers available at the annual Verona
Area High School plant sale, from 8
a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the
high schools greenhouse, 300 Richard

Students in the soil and plant class
have been germinating seeds this
semester and getting 200 hanging bas-
kets ready. There will also be annuals,
perennials, cacti, vegetables, herbs and
houseplants for sale. All money raised
goes back to the greenhouse for con-

May I touch it? a girl asked Ryan
Haack, looking at his arm.
After Verona resident Haack led an
assembly at Veronas Country View Ele-
mentary School last month, a dozen kids
surrounded him to ask how he drives and
rides a bicycle with one hand.
Born one-handed, Haack shared his per-
sonal story and demonstrated how he does
daily activities, like playing baseball.
I have one hand, but it didnt stop me
from doing anything, he said. It just
made me be more creative about how I do
this.
Haack is the author of the childrens
book Different is Awesome, based on his
life, which was published in 2011 and has
8,000 copies printed.
A similar event followed later that same
week to fit with the schools monthlong
theme of Different is Awesome, when
players from the UW-Whitewater wheel-
chair basketball team visited to talk about
their sport with the schools students.
Month of creativity
Each month, students in the greatness
patrol come up with a greatness goal such
as courage and generosity.
School principal Michelle Nummerdor
said the goal of the month was creativity,
which includes how to demonstrate cre-
ativity in school and personal life and what
it means to be a creative person.
Haacks daughter Anna is a member of
the greatness patrol, and said her dad made
her be more creative.

As I was trying one way for sports how
everyone does, he taught me different ways
to do it, Anna said.
Haack presentation
Haack said its important to expose kids
to peoples differences, even for the young-
er kids who might not totally grasp the
concept right away.
I can feel when I first started, many kids
are nervous and intimidated, not exactly
sure what to do, Haack said.
But by the end, he said, they seem more
comfortable.
Its very satisfying to me to see kids have
the courage to ask questions, he added.
Haacks positive attitude inspired many
kids and families. Kenya Tambolnino,
another greatness patrol member, recalled
the first time she saw Haack.
He didnt feel bad for himself at all,
Tambolnino said. He was not complaining
about anything, but just with smile on his
face.
Wheelchair basketball
The group of four from the UW-White-
water wheelchair basketball team answered
dozens of questions from the students
during their presentation.
That included questions about how they
get up if their chair falls over, the rules of
wheelchair basketball compared to the bas-
ketball they play and how they got involved
in the sport.
The players emphasized that the sport
is not much different than the basketball
the students play, and gave some a chance
to try out the wheelchairs and take some

Hard knock life
Verona Area School District middle school students per-
formed the famous musical Annie for their peers and the
community last month. The show, which included well-
known songs like Tomorrow, Easy Street and Its a
Hard Knock Life, followed the story of a young girls
quest to find her parents in New York City.

Navigating a dark world OccuPaws Guide Dog Association helps the blind

Stopping by curbs and steps, waiting at

blind.
Barb Schultze, president of the Madi-
son-based OccuPaws Guide Dog Associ-
ation, said the process of training a guide
dog is very challenging, and it can be up
to 18 months before theyre ready to help
blind people navigating the world safely.
To ensure their guide dogs have calm
personalities, OccuPaws only picks specif-
ic breeds like standard poodles, Labradors
and Golden Retrievers from breeders with
clear health histories going back several
generations. The dogs must even give up
some canine habits to become certified.
For example, as long as they have a har-

Volunteers begin training the puppies
at 8 weeks old, but almost half of the
dogs dont continue through the program

Even though dogs have
basic flight or fight instincts
like humans, they commu-
nicate stress and discomfort
differently. There are even
more signs to watch for
with reactive dogs, like
barking or lunging espe-
cially if they are tethered on
a leash.
Reactive dogs have
behavioral issues with sen-
sory triggers in public,
explained Dan Antolec of
Oregon-based Happy Bud-
dha Dog Training. This typ-
ically means they respond
aggressively to cars, oth-
er animals, people or just
walking on a leash.
Because owners should
act as advocates for their
dogs wellbeing, Antolec
said its important for them
to learn how dogs commu-
nicate stress. Owners can
then learn how to alleviate
those stressors and help
dogs overcome their fears.
Its about teaching dogs
how to cope with things
theyre not doing well

quency, duration and inten-
sity of their response.
A support group for own-
ers of reactive dogs takes
place each month in Ore-
gon, and its Facebook page
has gained more than 170

else around it.
The first session on April
29 was led by Antolec, and
he explored the warning
signs of stress and how to
help comfort anxious pups.
He said there are many rea-
sons a dog can be scared,
but most of the time it can
be attributed to genetics or
a lack of socialization when
the dog was a puppy.

seven runs Saturday to help Verona softball
defeat perennial powerhouse Stevens Point
Area Senior High 11-6.
Rainey (3-for-4) led the Wildcats, driving
in four runs. She homered in the fourth inning
and singled to drive in another in the fifth.
SPASH took an early lead in the first inning
when Aubrey Drohner singled with no outs.
The Wildcats took the lead for good, however,

The Wildcats cruised to wins at six of
seven flights in a Big Eight Conference
dual Thursday at home against Madi-
son East but had to dig a little deeper to
earn the sweep and a victory at No. 2
singles.
Sophomore Chris Queoff got pushed
to a third set against Tucker Skaar
despite having two chances to close
out the match in the second set. He pre-

Queoff was up 5-4 and again at 6-5
with a chance to close out the match,
only to have his serve broken both
times.
I probably just got in my own head
a little bit, trying to hit the ball too hard
and trying to put points away too fast,
he said. You have to be patient with
that type of player, who just gets every-
thing back.
The last time Queoff faced Skaar,
a couple of weeks ago at the Madison
East Invitational, they played a tie-
breaker in lieu of a full third set, but
Queoff said he learned from that first
meeting.
I found in our first match that com-
ing to the net was really helpful, Que-
off said. I tried to do that as much as I
could today, and it paid off for sure.
Its those kind of adjustments that
have allowed Queoff to move over from
No. 3 doubles to No. 2 singles this year.
I kind of converted over the offsea-
son, and Ive really enjoyed the switch
to singles quite a bit, Queoff said.
Even when I played doubles, hitting
ground strokes was probably my favor-
ite part of playing tennis.
Will Tennison breezed through his
No. 1 singles match against Benji Thiel,
winning 6-0, 6-1. Kush Nagpal defeat-
ed Hayden Boyce by the same score
at No. 3 singles and Kevin Fan added
a 6-1, 6-3 win over Andre Dufresne at
No. 4 singles.
Vivek Swaminath and Jordan Hutch-
croft rolled 6-0, 6-1 over Robbie
Doherty and Soren Gotschall at No.
1 doubles. Evan Schmidt and Conner
Dugan and Derek Argal and Matt Hap-
pel added 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-4 wins at

with teachers and get stu-
dents referred on specific
subjects and content.

clear about their purpose,
she said. Thats what were

students in kindergarten through fifth

distractions like a leaf blower, which they
had to ignore while writing, according to
an email from CKCS director Rick Kis-
ting.

immersed many students and teachers in
the stories, Kisting wrote. In the sto-
rytelling, the students ricochet between
laughter and utter concentration, rehears-
ing the transitions and the poise on stage
that will serve them when they take lifes
greater stage.

6. Mayors Business:
A. Chief Coughlin introduced Of-
ficers Dylan Heinz and Jordan Lueck,
and gave a brief background on each.
The officers were then sworn in as City
of Verona Police Officers by City Clerk
Clark. Mayor Hochkammer welcomed the
officers and offered them the full support
of the City Council.
B. Verona Road Business Coalition
Project Manager, Cindy Jaggi, updated
the Council on the coalitions efforts and
initiatives, and thanked the council for
budget support offered to the coalition in
2016 and 2017.
Mayor Hochkammer thanked Jaggi
and the coalition for the hard work they
put in. This service could be what makes
or breaks a business, or stops them from
relocating.
C. Mayor Hochkammer read the 2017
Arbor Day Proclamation, and designated
April 28, 2017 as Arbor Day in the City of
Verona.

* The downtown streetscape project
is moving along on time. Beginning on
June 12th, and for a 6-week period, traffic
will not be allowed on Main Street. Please
support the downtown businesses
during the construction process. Parking
is available. A final completion date of
September 29th is anticipated. Check the
citys website for a link to the South Main
Street Project Facebook page (@verona-
southmainproject)
* Polco surveys are ongoing on the
citys social media sites. The first survey
is a question about the aquatic facility. A
new question will be posted on a regular
basis, to engage citizens and get feed-
back. A report on the results of each of
the surveys will be provided.
* The farmers market is coming back
to Hometown Junction Park on Tuesdays
from 3:30 7:30 p.m. beginning May 2nd,
and will run through October 31st
* The memorial at Hometown Junc-
tion Park is complete.
8. Engineers Report:
* CTH PD Reconstruction, Shady
Oak Lane to Woods Road Paving and
curb and gutter along the north side of
the west bound lanes and median have
been poured. Watermain installation up
to the CTH PD/Northern Lights intersec-
tion will begin in early May.
* Signal Design for old PB/Whalen
Road, S. Main St./Paoli St, W. Verona
Ave./West End Circle Conduit has
been installed for Whalen /Old PB, and
West End Circle/West Verona Avenue.
Sidewalk and curb and gutter are being
replaced, and light pole bases have been
poured.
* AECOM is working on the design
for the senior center, old library and pub-
lic library parking lots, sidewalks and li-
brary entrance reconstruction

Downtown Streetscape Project, Stages
2 & 3.
This change order rectifies the as-
phalt material and paving for the drive-
way patches along the project, at a cost
of $6,732. It also provides a non-degrad-
able expansion joint between the pavers
section and the sidewalk/curb to prevent
paver cracking, at a cost of $47,772.00.
Parisi was successful in using this same
material in downtown Madison. Motion
carried 8-0.
(2) Discussion and Possible Action
Re: Amendment No. 1 for Hicks Compa-
ny Real Estate Acquisition Professional
Services for the CTH PD Project, Woods
Road to CTH M. Motion by Touchett, sec-

This amendment includes services for
appraisal of an additional parcel, and

way M and County Highway PD Project.
Motion by Touchett, seconded by Diaz,
to approve Resolution No. R-17-022 Ac-
quisition of
Property Related to County Highway
M and County Highway PD Project under
Transportation Project Plat 5992-09-81.
This resolution gives authorization to
the Public Works Director to acquire the
necessary property interests for the CTH
M and CTH PD project from each of the
individual parcels listed in the resolution.
The resolution will aid in keeping
the project on schedule, thereby prevent-
ing the risk of project delays or loss of
federal funds. Touchett and Diaz asked
for unanimous consent to change the
motion to read as follows: Motion by
Touchett, seconded by Diaz, to approve
Resolution No. R-17-022 Acquisition of
Property Related to County Highway M
and County Highway PD Project. There
were no objections. Motion carried 8-0.
Touchett stated that because Item

Re: A Developers Agreement for 116
Paoli Street.
Motion by Touchett, seconded by
Diaz, to approve a developers agreement
for 116 Paoli Street. This lot was owned
by the city as the old entrance to the
public works facility, and was sold to
the owner of 120 Paoli Street in 2002. A
residential dwelling is being proposed
for 116 Paoli Street. An 8-inch water main
owned by the city, and protected by a
utility easement, is part of this property.
The owners have agreed to relocate the
water main to the Senior Center driveway,
at their own expense, and connect to the
existing water main in the Senior Center
parking lot. The work is required to be
completed in conjunction with the Senior
Center parking lot reconstruction project.
City Attorney Kleinmaier asked that the
contingency of final review and approval
by the Public Works Director, City Admin-
istrator and City Attorney be added to the
motion for this item. Touchett and Diaz
agreed to the amended motion. Motion
carried 8-0.
10. Old Business
A. Discussion and Possible Action
Re: Selection of a City Council Repre-
sentative to the Plan Commission. Mayor
Hochkammer asked for nominations for
the City Council Representative to the
Plan Commission. Alderperson Doyle
nominated Alderperson Diaz as the
City Council Representative to the Plan
Commission. Alderperson McGilvray
nominated Alderperson Linder as the
City Council Representative to the Plan
Commission. On roll call: Alder Doyle

11. New Business
A. Discussion and Possible Action
Re: Resolution No. R-17-023 Approving
a Loan Agreement between the City of
Verona and the Verona Area Community
Theater, Inc. The Verona Area Community
Theater, Inc. (VACT) is building a build-
ing at 103 Lincoln Street. VACT received
$1.4 million in donations for the project,
and requested $300,000 from the Citys
Revolving Loan Fund Program to finish
the project. The Verona Economic Devel-
opment Commission approved the loan
application and is recommending a loan
package containing two loans for com-
pletion of the building:
* Loan A - $200,000 at 2% interest for
10 years
* Loan B - $100,000 at 2% interest
for 5 years, with payment of interest only
until the end of the loan Mayor Hochkam-
mer stated having a loan through the city
protects us. If there were a loan through
another lender, the city would take the
second lienholder position.
Motion by Diaz, seconded by Doyle,
to approve Resolution No. R-17-023 ap-
proving a loan agreement between the
City of Verona and the Verona Area Com-
munity Theater, Inc., contingent upon the
VACT ground lease being approved by
the Common Council at the May 8, 2017
Common Council meeting. Motion car-
ried 7-1, with Alder McGilvray abstaining.
Additionally, McGilvray did not partici-
pate in discussion or voting on this item
as a member of the Economic Develop-
ment Commission.
B. Discussion and Possible Action
