1. Standards/Quality Indicators/Skills
Missouri and national standards, quality indicators, and skills addressed by this lesson
3.LS3.C.1 Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular ecosystem some organismsbased on
structural adaptations or behaviorscan survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot. (Clarification
Statement: Examples of evidence could include needs and characteristics of the organisms and habitats involved.
The organisms and their habitat make up a system in which the parts depend on each other.)
Students will be able to explain what an ecosystem and habitat are. Students will be able to identify which
organisms go in the correct layers of the ocean zone. Students will be able to compare ecosystems and explain
how some organisms survive well, survive less, and some not at all.
1. I will lead a group discussion using the smartboard and then a presentation.
2. Students will lead their own group discussions while working on their KWL Charts, playing the matching
game and then while putting their organisms in the correct ocean zones.
6. Learning Activities
Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning objectives (goals)
Students will learn organisms and the different ocean zone layers and be able to put the organisms in the
correct ocean zone.
Smartboard
Crayons
Glue
Pencils
Scissors
Venn Diagram
Open Ocean Power Point
KWL Chart Handouts
Open Ocean Animal Flashcards Handout
8. Technology
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student
learning
I will be using the smartboard to show a power point of the ocean zones and the organisms living in them.
9. Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc.
Students that need help completing the assignment will have help. The exceptional learners will be the leaders in
their group and be able to help the other students.
I will be walking around the classroom to make sure that my students are on task and stay focused. I will be using
the classroom Dojo to help motivate students to stay on task.
11. Extensions
Activities for early finishers that extend students understanding of and thinking about the learning
objectives (goals) by applying their new knowledge in a different way
Students will be able to go on the internet and play Open Ocean Habitats to help re-enforce what they have learned
today. https://coast.noaa.gov/psc/sea/content/open-ocean-habitats.html
We will review todays lesson and then we will do a Venn diagram comparing two ocean animals, and then we will
play Open Ocean Bingo as a review for their test.
