Crisis Management
Procedures

1
INTRODUCTION

These emergency procedures are designed to provide guidance to those having

responsibility for the safety of pupils, school staff and users of school facilities.

Common sense should dictate the reaction of school authorities to emergency

situations. All CANNOT be neatly defined into a category for which hard and fast
guidelines can be drawn. Individual judgment will need to be exercised in given
situations. Continuing and meaningful efforts to prevent incidents that lead to
emergency situations should be the area of greatest concern.

The Superintendent has primary responsibility for the emergency at hand. In the event
that the Superintendent is not on duty at the time of the emergency, the building
Principal will take charge and be responsible for the emergency at hand.

In all emergency situations, the Superintendent will be the only source of

information to the press.

The key elements for this Crisis Management Plan involve the following:

Keeping our students and staff safe and out of harms way

Dealing effectively and fairly with the news media

Stopping the rumor mill (internally and externally)

Informing district staff using information channels to communicate effectively

2
Identifying the specific role of each member of the school staff during a crisis

The Crisis Management Plan provides for crisis communication strategies that include
the following:

Procedure to alert and communicate with key stakeholders immediately of

the crisis, its management, and our response

Process to determine and verify the facts

Establish news areas

Follow-up information and actions to be taken by the district in a crisis

HOW TO TALK WITH STUDENTS IN CRISIS SITUATIONS

14
Prevention Stage:

1. Continue to be genuinely interested in the emotional health of all students in your

classes. Keep yourself psychologically healthy and model self-care to your students
(how to work out problems, deal with stress, etc.).
2. Let students know through re respect you show them in class as well as verbally
that you are available to listen. You dont need to have answers, but you do need to
listen and empathize with the students as much as you feel you can. Being seen talking
with students about non-academics builds up the trust level students have in you and
makes it more likely that they will break down barriers that prevent teens from talking
about emotional problems they are having with adults.
3. Make students aware of the availability of the school counselors, social worker,
psychologist, and nurse to listen and help with problem solving of various types. Check
yourself on a regular basis for students who appear to have emotional problems (may
be manifested in your classes as depression, anxiety, and acting-out behaviors)
please make referrals on these students, before or after you talk with the student, to
support personnel. If possible, make some mention of the student and your concerns
as soon as you can this gives the support personnel some point of reference to
intervene or background information if problems being to escalate for the student.

Intervention Stage:

1. First, ask about depression. You could say something like: You dont seem to be
yourself lately. You seem to be sort of down. Is something bothering you?
2. If the student answers affirmative say, Are you depressed about something?
3. If yes, ask the student about the length of his/her depression, how bad it gets,
how much the person is crying, and how sleep and appetite have been affected.
4. Follow up the students response with a direct question about whether they have
been contemplating suicide. It is important to talk openly about this in order to
determine risk.

4.1 Find out if the student has a plan. How lethal is it? Is the method available to the
student? Does anyone know about this?
4.2 Have they attempted suicide before and by what means?
4.3 Ask: Why are you thinking about this now? Whats bothering you or who are
you angry with? What was the last straw?
5. At this point as the student if he/she would be willing to talk to a counselor, social
worker, school psychologist, or nurse. Tell the student that we will help them. The
student must be informed that his/her parents will be called.
TERRORISM

such as a plastic zip-lock bag or another envelope.

Notify 911 and the Minnesota Duty Officer (800) 422-0798.

handled letter without any gloves may be appropriate. Get advice of public safety
officials.

Building administrator notifies students and staff if evacuation is deemed necessary.
Do not mention terrorism or chemical or biological agent.

Report any unusual activities immediately to the appropriate officials.

Uninvolved students and staff will be evacuated to a safe distance outside of the
school building. After consulting with appropriate officials, building administrator
may move students to the Granada Park Shelter House, if indicated.
