Prepositions

Language Arts

Each pupil is given a piece of paper, a number of cut out squares and
circles.
The squares represent boxes and the circles represent the various
prepositions.
Pupils write their names and various prepositions on the paper, they then
stick on a box for every different preposition. They then stick the circles
where the prepositions should be.

Warm-up

Introduce the various prepositions using the Prepositions word cards- use
different methods of drilling such as What is Missing?.
Ask pupils to take out their pencils from their pencil cases and give them
instructions using the various prepositions. Put the pencil under the desk.
Put the pencil on your head. After each instruction pupils identify the
preposition and repeat it together.
Pupils can then take it in turns to give an instruction using prepositions to
the rest of the class.

Act It Out!

The teacher writes the names of the pupils on lollipop sticks and puts
them in a jar. Also have prepositions written down on lollipop sticks in
another jar.
The teacher then pulls out one stick and calls the pupil to the front of the
class. A preposition stick is also picked. The teacher makes a sentence
using the name and the preposition and the pupil acts it out, for example
Siti is under the desk. The commands can be silly or challenging to make
the activity fun.
This activity can also be done using teams or with pupils picking the sticks
and forming the sentences (the teacher can put his/ her name in jar too!)

Find Your Partner!

Take the pupils to an open space. Divide the pupils into two groups and
give each pupil a letter A or B. (If there are twenty pupils, divide into two
groups of ten, divide the groups into As and Bs- to make it easier for
pupils the teacher could give them an A/B sticker.)
The teacher then gives a command using a preposition, for example Pupil
A stands in front of Pupil B.
The teams then have to follow the instruction (if there is a team of ten,
they will divide into pairs- each A standing in front of each B).
The first team to follow the instruction and have the whole team in
formation wins the round.

Say The Opposite

The teacher uses the Prepositions Word cards. The teacher holds up a
preposition and the pupils say the opposite. For example, Under! Over!

Prepositions Race!

Divide the pupils into teams. Give each team an envelope containing
small preposition word cards.
The pupils are instructed to leave the cards in the envelope and choose
one player as a runner.
The pupils close their eyes/ put the heads on the table while the teacher
writes a simple sentence that is missing a preposition on the board.

On the teachers command, the pupils open their eyes, empty their
envelopes on the table and find the missing preposition. The runner then
brings the correct preposition to the teachers desk.
The first team to bring the correct preposition to the teachers desk is the
winner!
