LESSON PLAN

I. Describe the Class

The class consists of 30 9th grade art 1 students. Of these students 2 are ELL, 2 LD

students, and 3 gifted students.

II. Subject/Skill:

The subject is Art 1 and the skill will be defining the art elements.

III. Objective(s)

The 9th grade art students will be able to define 5 of the 7 art elements following the

lecture and discussion. After the lesson the students will also be able to apply their

knowledge of the art elements and use it to describe a painting and they will use 5 out of

the 7 elements.
IV. Procedures

1.) Inform students that today they will be learning about the art elements and write

the objective on the board. Hand out worksheet with definitions of art elements.

2.) After the discussion remind students of previous lessons in which they learned

about colors and the different kinds of colors there are. Ask them about primary,

secondary, tertiary colors. Remind them of different color combinations such as

complimentary, and analogous. Ask them about the different shapes they have

learned about. Remind them about geometric, and organic shapes. Explain that art

elements help us break down artworks so that we can discuss and talk about them

critically.

3.) Bring up picture of Van Goghs Terrace of a Cafe at Night on the projector.

Instruct students to use the sheet with art elements and definitions and follow

along. Begin to breakdown each art element in Van Goghs Terrace of a Cafe at

Night. Start with color and discuss his use of complimentary colors in the

painting. Follow up with line and discuss his use of line in the painting. Define

implied line for your students and show where it occurs in the painting. Continue

with looking at shape. Discuss the use of shape in the painting and the use of both

geometric and organic shapes. Discuss texture in the painting. Describe the

texture of the paint and also ask student if they think the texture is meant to
represent how an object actually feels why or why not? Continue and explain how

the texture of the paint exists along with the created texture of the street. Explain

that the overall texture of this painting is rough. Discuss form in the painting.

Describe how the piece is more 2-D than 3-D. Discuss value in the painting. If it

helps tell students to imagine the painting in black and white to better see value.

Make note of the light parts of the painting such as the sitting area and the dark

parts, which are the buildings. Discuss the space of the painting. Discuss what

there appears to be in the front and what there appears to be in the middle and

background. Tell the students how the tables come out in front and the buildings

recede into the back of the space.

4.) Next bring up Da Vincis Last supper on the projector. Ask students to come up

and describe one art element they see in the painting. Make sure to let students

know to use words they previously learned and to be descriptive.

5.) The students will be asked to describe a painting using 5 of the 7 art elements on a

worksheet that will be handed out.

V. Materials

The following materials will be necessary, worksheet with definitions,

worksheet to be filled in, projector, internet, and computer.

VI. Modifications

ELL students should be handed definitions ahead of time so that they have enough time

to understand and possibly translate the material. The students should also be talked to

while they are completing the worksheet to see if they understand the material. If needed

these students should be allowed to take the materials home and turn them in later so that

they have more time to read and comprehend the language. The LD students will be

given a longer time to complete the worksheet. They will also be given one on one

attention while students are working on the worksheets to see if they understand the

material. If the gifted students have finished with the assignment early they will be given

the opportunity to create an art piece and describe how they used the art elements within

the piece. They can also discuss with the teacher if there are other concepts they would

like to move onto.

VII. Assessment/Homework

Collecting the worksheet students completed in class and grading them to see if the

class understood the concept. They will be sent home and asked to pick one piece of

artwork either contemporary or modern and describe the art elements they see in the

artwork. They will be instructed to use all 7 of the elements.

Value The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the
darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray

Remember to use previously learned vocabulary words and be specific. (example: I see

the use of an analogous color scheme.)
