Goal: By June 2018, All Saints Catholic School will develop and implement a personalized learning curriculum. Teachers at ASCS
will the curriculum into their classrooms, and 60% of instructional time will follow the principles and guidelines of personalized
learning.
Brief Description of Plan: Personalized learning can be challenging for teachers to implement. This is why it is important to create a
clear and cohesive plan to develop and implement a personalized learning curriculum. With the principal leading the plan, she will
assess and determine teachers current beliefs and opinions on student learning and instructional time. This information will be used to
select an action team. The actions team will then create a shared vision that embodies personalized learning. With this vision in mind,
the team will address all aspects of the new program, including curriculum, roles and responsibilities, teacher buy-in, and services and
equipment. The team will receive extensive training through the Institute of Personalized Learning and visit classrooms of
personalized learning in Wisconsin. The team will use the training to provide professional development for all other staff members. A
pilot program will be developed and implemented to give teachers a chance to work with the new curriculum and visit classrooms to
see real-life examples of personalized learning. Teachers will then start to incorporate personalized learning in their own classrooms.
Opportunities will be available to share, discuss, and reflect on the implementation of the new program. At the end of the school year
of 2018, students, parents, and teachers will complete a survey to assess the goal and the success of the program. The action team will
also collect and analyze student data from the current school year and previous school year. This will determine if the program
contributed to an increase in student achievement.
Rationale for Action Plan: At All Saints Catholic School, student achievement is not improving. Each year, we see test scores that
either remain constant or dip slightly. The number of behavior referrals has increased and student attendance continues to be
problematic. It is time for a significant change in the way students are taught. It is no longer acceptable to instruct students as they are
all the same. Classrooms need to do more than differentiate. They need to personalize. Personalized learning positions students at the
center of their learning. Students play an active role in setting goals, planning lessons, monitoring progress, and demonstrating
proficiency. James Rickabaugh developed the Institute for Personalized Learning and dedicated tens of years to researching the
positive effects of personalized learning on students. Rickabaugh outlines the research and guide for implementing his personalized
learning model in his book Tapping the Power of Personalized Learning: A Roadmap for School Leaders. Rickabaugh found that
personalized learning was more engaging for students leading to an increase in student achievement. ASCS will greatly benefit from a
similar model. If teachers personalize their instruction and let their students be more in charge of their own learning, then it is very
likely that the school will see an increase in test scores, student grades, behavior and attendance records, and, most importantly, a
passion for learning.
