interest by using a hook Synthesizing is different in that it isnt an idea the author said, it is an original idea,
takeway or new understanding from the reading that is your own.
So after this reading, our summaries will likely be very similiar, but our synthesis
will be different according to each of our background knowledge and takeaways.
Synthesizing involves using all the other skills we have learned this year such as
inferring, visualizing, determining importance, and using them to create our own
original idea. I will model these strategies for you as we go.

airplane flying in the back, as well as the title. I will write this in the top of the
synthesizing pyramid to track if my thinking changes.

Read first page. Im gunna stop here because I have already learned a lot. I
learned that the boy and man live in the aiport. As I read this page I also
wonderedwhy dont they have a home? What caused them to live in the airport?
On the left I will only will use the strategy of determining importance because this
half will help guide us into a summary, and the right side we will record different
thinking, wonderings, and feelings we have as we read. This side will help us
create our synthesis.

Read next 2 pages. Im going to stop here again. I noticed there are other people
who are homeless living in the airport aswell and they have to try not to get
caught. Throughout this portion I felt nerous because if I were in their poistion I
would feel constantly scared of being noticed and being kicked out.

Read next 3 pages. This section made me wonder how long they have been living
in the airport because it seems like they have gotten pretty good at going
unnoticed and they recognize regulars in the airport. It also made me think about
all the times I have gone to the aiport and I have come and gone and never
considered their might be people who arnt also on the move.

WE DO: Now in the next section, we will record things that happened in the book
aswell as what the book made us think about or feel together. Make notes on your
organizer to help you remember your thinking.

Read next 2 pages. Elicit responses. (note the bird, washing in the bathroom
carefully, dad only works weekends)
Read next 3 Pages. Elicit responses. (note the boy tries to get money from tips,
what is he saving for?

Read next 2 pages. Elicit responses. ( mom passed away so no apartment, feel
really sad idk what I would do in their position)

Now lets look back at my initial thoughts. First, I thought this story was about a
boy and father headed home, Now I think this story is about the life of a father and
son who are homeless. Synthesizing is an ongoing process, and my thinking has
already changed.

YOU DO: Now I will finish up the book and you will jot down key ideas, and
thoughts you had during the reading on your own! Pay close attention to your
personal dialogue, what emotions do you feel, what reactions do you have, what
questions do you have?

Finish book. (note: are any of my classmates in this situation?, I feel lucky to have
a home, bird is hope)

Now, turn and talk with a neighbor and share some of your notes to the end of the
book. When you are done sharing, turn the page over and write a line down the
middle. On one side, create a summary of the main events of Fly Away Home,
write somebody, wanted, but, so, then to help guide your summary as well as the
notes you took. On the other side create a synthesis of your new understanding
and what you took away from the book. What does this story mean and share with
you?

Call on students to share what they summarized and synthesized.

Share my own. New synthesis as the final thinking.
(final thinking on pyramid) This is a story about perservering and making the most
of difficult situations and being grateful for what you have.
Notice how my thinking changed as I read. My thinking became deeper and I left
with a new understanding of what this story was about.

Reflection: I think this lesson went really well. Students had really awesome synthesis.
Summary: Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting is a story about a boy and father who live in an airport. The
family must be on the move day to day to be unnoticed. The boy wants to have a real home again, but
they cannot afford it. The father and the boy both try to earn money and learn to make the most of their
situation. The boy is reminded by a sparrow to keep trying, and to stay hopeful.
Synthesis: This story depicts a family who perseveres and makes the most of their misfortune and
homelessness. It shows that no matter how young, you can help through persistence, an optimistic
attitude, and by remaining hopeful of a brighter future. This story makes me feel thankful for the family
and home I have and brings awareness that not everyone has all the blessings I do.
