4.1 Addition and Subtraction

In 4.1 I used hot and ice cubes to help me add and subtract. Hot cubes are represented using +
and cold cubes are represented with -.
For example in a problem like -7 + -5
I will be adding 7 cold cubes and 5 cold cubes. Why cold cubes? I will be adding cold cubes
because the negative sign in front of the number indicates that they are going to be cold. So the
drawing will look like this:
------- 7 cold cubes + ----- 5 cold cubes = ------------ 12 cold cubes which equal to -12
Another example -7 + 5
The drawing will consist of 7 cold cubes and 5 hot cubes. The drawing will look like this :
+++++ 5 hot cubes and ------- 7 cold cubes.

Subtraction:
-3 (-5) when doing this problem I need to start with 3 cold cubes, but I need to take away 5
cold cubes but I dont have enough. Since I dont have enough I have to add zero to 3. The
drawing will look like this:

7 5 since both numbers are positive I will be using only hot cubes.
+++++++ I started with 7 hot cubes. I have to take away 5 hot cubes and I do have enough to
take away 5 hot cubes.
+++++++
++ +++++ = I take away 5 and I only have 2 hot cubes left over.
So the answer to 7-5 = 2.

-7 -5 In this problem I will be starting off with 7 cold cubes and I need to take away 5 hot cubes
but I dont have any. So in this problem I will have to place zeros until I have enough hot cubes,
so my picture will look like this:

4.2 Multiplication and Division

In 4.2 I learned how to multiply with cold and hot cubes.
+3 x -5 , I learned that +3 signifies the number of groups you will be adding and if the number
was -3 then the signifies that I will be taking away 3 groups. And the -5 signifies the number in
each group and since there is a in front of it, it also signifies that the cubes inside of the group
will be cold, if it were hot the symbol in front of the 5 wouldve been a +. So the drawing will
look like this:
----- ----- ----- = 3 groups of 5 cold cubes which equal to 15 cold cubes.
-3 x 5 in this problem I will be taking away 3 groups of 5 hot cubes. So the drawing will look
like this:

+++++ +++++ +++++

(-3) x (-5)
In this problem I will be taking away 3 groups of 5 cold cubes. The drawing will look like this:
Division:
In division I learned how to divide by finding the missing addend.
The problem is 12/ 3. I need to find the missing addend that 3 can multiply to get the answer 12.
The equation goes as follows bq=a
12 = a and 3 = b
3 x _ = 12 so I am looking for q.
3 x 4 = 12. I know if I multiply 3 and 4 I get 12. So q = 4.

12/ -3
12 = a and -3 = b , q= ?
-3 x _ = 12
-3 x -4 =12
So q = -4

-12/ -3
-12 = a , -3 = b , q=?
-3 x _ = -12
-3 x 4 = -12
So q = 4.
