Andrew Brown
UWRT 1104
Dear Andrew,
from St. Charles, Illinois, but through constant moves I have seen numerous states and landed in
Mooresville, North Carolina. The sole reason I chose to attend UNC Charlotte was due to the
opportunities it provides business majors inside and outside of school. With seven fortune 500
companies located in the city of Charlotte, along with numerous other large businesses, I believe
it was the perfect choice for a future business major like me to attend UNC Charlotte. Over the
course of the semester, I expect to gain useful writing strategies that will be vital in terms of
future UWRT classes and assist in composing crucial writing pieces such as a resume or other
work related documents. Not only do I expect to gain a better understand for proper writing
techniques, but I expect to gain a better appreciation for the importance of reading and analyzing
Coming into this course, one of my biggest worries I have is my lack of motivation to
read a scholarly book, but I look forward to that changing over the course of this semester.
Reflecting on my reading history and abilities, I would say that my history contains moderate
reading, but I expect this course to open my eyes to the importance of reading and how it can
expand a readers capabilities. On the other hand, writing has been something that I have always
taken interest in and always wish to improve upon the skills I have already attained as a writer. I
enjoy writing certain pieces of literature, but when it comes to research papers filled with in text
citations and citation pages, my interest periodically dwindles. One fact that I believe is
interesting about myself is that I taught myself how to play piano and I learn new songs by ear.
The quote I chose from the syllabus is, Anything is possible if youve got enough nerve
(J.K. Rowling), and I chose this because I fully agree with this quote due to the fact that I truly
believe if you are willing to put yourself out there it can be extremely rewarding. If I were to
guess where you selected this quote from, I would say it was from one of J.K Rowlings pieces
of literature. I think this quote correlates to the material presented on the syllabus because in
UWRT we will be writing personal reflections and in order to write a personal reflection you
need to have the nerve to write what you feel. The value I chose from the UWRT engender was
composing processes because I think self-recognition of an individuals writing and reading style
is critical in order to succeed in a course such as UWRT. Personally, I would describe composing
processes as recognizing an individuals reading and writing styles, while remaining open to
learning and applying new strategies to grow as a writer and reader. The only question I have that
was not addressed while discussing the syllabus is what specific materials will we be analyzing
such as what cartoons, movies, short films, and pieces of literature will we be analyzing over the
