Q1 (a) Sketch a basic block diagram of a vehicle driving system. Consider the
desired course of travel as the reference input and the driver as the sensor
and controller.

(b) A mechanical suspension system as shown in Figure Q1 is subjected to a known


displacement x3(t) with respect to the reference. Neglect the response from the base
spring

(i) Determine the two independent equations of motion

(ii) Obtain the equations of motion in terms of the Laplace transform, assuming
that the initial conditions are zero.

(iii) Sketch a signal-flow graph representing the system of equation.

(iv) Obtain the relationship between X1(s) as the output and X3(s) as the input by
using masons signal flow gain formula.

(c) The transfer function that relates input voltage V, with the output torque , for a DC
motor can be described to behave in first order system. Time response test have been
conducted using input voltage of 6 V, can produce steady state output torques of 20
Ncm, and the motor needs only 0.4 seconds to reach output torque of 12.6 Ncm.
Develop the transfer function for this DC motor.

Q2 (a) A mechanical rotational system as shown in Figure Q2 is to be developed for the


research purpose. The design must incorporate below specifications,

(i) Examine the transfer function of G (s ) = for the above system

(ii) Solve for the value of J and D for it to fulfill the specifications.

Q3 a) Define what is stable system?


b) The aircraft concept uses quickly turning jet nozzles to steer the airplane. The
control system for the heading or direction control is shown in Figure 3. Using
Rouths stability criterion, determine;

i) The range of K for the system to be stable


ii) The critical value of gain K that makes the system marginally stable
