For additional reference while loading software, Mentor Graphics provides key system
documentation on SupportNet and the install DVD. Refer to the following manuals:
Order software licenses from Mentor Graphics. Licensing should be installed prior to
installing application software.
o Windows Using the Mentor Graphics Install program, install Licensing for
Windows (PCLS) using the instructions in Installing Mentor Graphics Licensing.
After Windows licensing is installed, you can continue with the software and
documentation installation in this chapter.
o Linux If you have not installed licensing already, refer to Configuring Licensing
on Linux for information on license setup.
Note
To make full use of the Mentor Graphics Install programs automatic product selection by
license availability, set up your software licensing environment before running the install
program. For additional information, refer to Licensing on page 7.
When naming the folder to contain the product tree, whether 32 or 64 bit, the folder
name cannot contain any spaces. For example, C:\MentorGraphics.
Support for some hardware keys (dongles) is discontinued. The Pink (SSI) and CPLUS
parallel port keys are no longer supported. Other parallel port keys are also affected by
this change depending on the Windows operating system you use. For a table of
supported hardware keys, refer to the Hardware Key (Dongle) Discontinuations and
Replacement FAQ. To swap your existing parallel port hardware key for a USB
hardware key, refer to TechNote MG577871 for details.
The X-ENTP VX.2 release automatically installs the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 and
2010 runtime components. During installation of X-ENTP VX.2, if your computer
already has these installed, this becomes a quick maintenance install to make sure your
computer meets the compatibility requirements.
In some cases, this requires a system reboot. If a reboot is required, a message appears
where you must click OK. Installation cannot be successfully completed until after a
reboot has occurred. After the system reboots, you must restart the Mentor Graphics
Install program and continue your installation of X-ENTP VX.2.
Tip: You can avoid this potential reboot by pre-installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008
SP1 Redistribution software and Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Maintenance software
before you install the X-ENTP VX.2 release.
The Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 and 2010 packages are included on the installation
media and may be installed manually from there or you can obtain them from Microsoft:
o Microsoft VC++ 2008:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5582
o Microsoft VC++ 2010:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999
Note
If you are performing batch installations of X-ENTP VX.2, it is strongly recommended
that you install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable package and the Microsoft
Visual C++ Maintenance software on all systems first, reboot, and then install the
X-ENTP VX.2 release.
The X-ENTP VX.2 release includes a separate documentation install that you need to
download separately from the software install. The Mentor Graphics Install program
provides dialog boxes where you specify the documentation and software components to
install. If you plan to install documentation to a location different from the software, it is
best to plan that location before you begin the installation.
If you plan to install documentation to a web server, it is best to identify that location
before you begin the installation. For more information, refer to Considerations When
Installing the Documentation Package on page 110.
You may notice the introduction of the Registrator in the installation instructions. The
Registrator replaces the Configurator in VX installs (X-ENTP VX.2, PADSVX, etc). It
does not affect the EE 7.9.x installs. 7.9.x installs still use the Configurator. Like the
Configurator, the Registrator runs automatically when you install your software. It
examines your environment and leads you through a series of dialog boxes. It then sets
up your environment based on your selections.
Multiple side-by-side releases are supported on Windows. Previously, a single WDIR
environment variable was created and used to support all installed releases. Now, a
uniquely named WDIR environment variable is created for each release. The name of
the new environment variable is based on the root name of the release, for example:
WDIR_EEVX_2, WDIR_PADSVX_2, etc. This side-by-side support enables you to
have the X-ENTP VX.2 release and future releases installed and available for use
without having to switch releases.
If installing X-ENTP VX.2 onto a machine that includes EE 7.9.x, a pre-install script
displays a warning that an earlier release version has been detected on the machine. If
you continue, the EE 7.9.x version is unconfigured.
you from installing 64-bit applications on 32-bit machines. The Mentor Graphics Install
program also prevents you from installing 32-bit and 64-bit applications into the same target
directory on a 64-bit machine. If you need to install 32-bit and 64-bit applications on the same
64-bit machine, you must install them to separate target directories. For example:
C:\MentorGraphics and C:\MentorGraphics64.
The major benefit of 64-bit applications is that they can access more than 4 GB of memory. This
means that they can represent very large and complex data models. They also provide a better
infrastructure to represent a larger number of objects. Conversely, 64-bit applications use more
system memory because they require 64-bit memory pointers for access instead of 32-bit
memory pointers. The amount of extra system memory consumed depends on how extensively
an application uses memory-pointer references.
Note
Some Mentor Graphics products make use of 64-bit Microsoft ODBC drivers that
conflict with a 32-bit installation of Microsoft Office. If the Mentor Graphics Install
program detects this conflict, it presents the following message.
Allegro to Xpedition
CellGen
Layout and Library Translators
SymGen
xPCB CAM Output Manager
xPCB EDIF Schematic Interface
Application-Specific Considerations
Although 64-bit applications can show improved performance and capacity, it is not guaranteed.
A general improvement in performance is not typical. For certain Xpedition Enterprise
applications, there can be benefits.
Constraint Manager
The 64-bit version of this application can show improved performance and capacity:
Note
Because the memory limit for Java applications is explicitly defined, you may have to
modify this limit manually to exceed the default allocations set by Mentor Graphics start-
up scripts.
Benefits for complex, new technology like integrated 3D and HyperLynx DRC, and
TLA designs.
Accesses approximately 30% more memory.
Designs can load approximately 15% faster; however, they can also take longer to load
(approximately 4% longer). The size and complexity of a design determines actual
performance.
Automation-Specific Considerations
When you intend to deploy automation that was developed for a 32-bit environment into a 64-
bit environment, ensure that your dependencies support 64-bit usage.
Table -1 lists .ocx files from Microsoft VB6 or other third-parties. If your company uses one of
the libraries listed in the table, your current scripts will no longer work in a 64-bit environment,
and you will have to modify those scripts.

On Linux:
Untar the file. For example:
# tar -xvf X-ENTP_VX.2_ESDM.rhel5.8.tar
On Windows:
Note
The following instructions use WinZip as the extraction utility. If you use a different
extraction utility, make appropriate selections to ensure that the directory structure of the
Mentor Graphics software is preserved.

MGLS Licensing Default license type; this selection sets the
MGLS_LICENSE_FILE environment variable. You are encouraged to use
this option for optimum performance of Mentor Graphics applications. Only
Mentor Graphics software recognizes MGLS_LICENSE_FILE, thereby
speeding up the license checkout process and other licensing-related activity.
Software from other vendors that use FlexNet ignore it and use their own
custom variable or LM_LICENSE_FILE instead.
LM Licensing Sets the LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable. This
FlexNet licensing environment variable is used by the license server and
application to determine the location of the license file. Select this option to
point to a license file not stored in the default location or to point to one or
more license servers. For Mentor Graphics applications, the

If the installation source is on multiple DVDs, all should be copied to the same
repository. Directories with the same name should be merged at the repository (and the
original name/structure should be retained).
If the installation source was downloaded, extract or unzip the download to the
repository. The idea is to collocate all the files in the repository.
The Mentor Graphics Install program needs to be copied to the repository (assuming it was not
automatically delivered with the source or the source is a Mentor Install Bundle (MIB)). The
Mentor Graphics Install program is one file on Windows (setup.exe) and one file for Linux
platforms (install.<vco> where <vco> is a platform suffix of three or four characters that is used
for platform identification). When you execute the batch script, the Mentor Graphics Install
program is installed on each of the machines.
1. Navigate to the directory where you downloaded the release to and start the Mentor
Graphics Install program.
On Windows: Double-click setup.exe to start the install program. You can also start the
Batch Tool directory from the Start menu > Mentor Graphics > Batch Tool if you
already have the Mentor Graphics Install program installed on your machine.
Alternatively, if you are installing from DVD, copy the contents of the DVD to the
repository and then run setup.exe from there.
On Linux: Invoke install.<vco>. Where vco equals the platform identification of the
platform you are installing to (such rhel5 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5).
For example: /cdrom/install.rhel5
2. Click Tools > Batch Tool on the Mentor Graphics Install Home window to display the
Welcome to the Batch Tool screen.
3. Select Wizard to begin the step-by-step process of creating an executable batch script.
4. From the Mentor Graphics Installer window, specify the installer executable located at
the repository location and click Next.

that you will be installing the documentation to later. Click Next to display the
Product Selection dialog box and continue with Step 9.
Install software and use shared documentation This choice installs the
software to the target location specified on the previous dialog box. Click Next to
display the Documentation Search Path.
o From the Documentation Search Path dialog box (Figure 2-11), choose from the
following:
Network share this is the path where the software looks for the
documentation. You can type in the location or Browse to it.
Network share example: Z:\mgcdocs\EEVX.2docs
The EEVX.2docs directory is created during the documentation install.
Internal website this is the URL (internal, web-served http:// address) where
the software looks for the documentation. You can type in the web address and
Test it. Refer to Installing Documentation on an Internal HTTP Server on
page 116 for more information on setting up an internal website.
9. From the Product Selection window, select the platform you are installing to, select the
products to install, and click Next.
10. From the License Agreement Viewing Preference window, select your preference for
viewing and agreeing to the Mentor Graphics License Agreement and click Next. The
License Agreement displays now if you chose to Accept.
11. From the Batch Script Options window, specify the optional script behavior during
execution and click Agree.
12. From the Confirm and Save window, confirm the product selections, specify the file to
save to (for example, myBatchFile.bat), and click Save.
13. Click Done to exit the Batch Tool.
The following registrator.ini example code shows how to set a different working directory for
specified flows and releases:
[defaults]
mgls_license_file=1717@licenseserver
WDIR=C:\my_WDIR
WDIR_7.9.5EE=C:\WDIR_7.9.5EE\
WDIR_EEVX.2=C:\WDIR_EEVX.2\
The value after WDIR_ should always match the release (folder) name under the install target
area (such as WDIR_EEVX.2). This is the only supported WDIR configuration to manage your
working directory between releases or flows.
Modify the installation batch file (for example, myBatchFile.bat) created by the Mentor
Graphics Install program by performing the following steps:
3. Add the following line to the REM section for proper batch installation:
REM***ADD YOUR OWN PRE INSTALL COMMANDS BELOW HERE***
REM***Set Variables***
5. Add the following lines to the Post Install section for proper batch installation:
REM***ADD YOUR OWN POST INSTALL COMMANDS BELOW HERE***
6. Save and Exit the batch file session. The batch file is now ready to be run via command
line.
On Linux:
myBatchFile.sh
On Windows:
myBatchFile.bat
During the execution of the batch script it is possible to specify a source or target different from
what is in the batch script.
On Linux:
myBatchFile.sh -tgt <altTargetPath>
myBatchFile.sh -src <altSourcePath>
On Windows:
myBatchFile.bat -tgt <altTargetPath>
myBatchFile.bat -src <altSourcePath>
During the execution of the batch script it is possible to specify an alternate location for the
installation of the Mentor Graphics Install program. For example, the default installation
location of the Mentor Graphics Install program on Windows is C:\MentorGraphics\Install.
To specify an alternate install location for the Mentor Graphics Install program:
On Linux:
myBatchFile.sh -msiloc <altInstallerPath>
On Windows:
myBatchFile.bat -msiloc <altInstallerPath>

Help & Manuals User, reference, and process documentation.
The typical Mentor Graphics Documentation System has the following directory structure.
MentorGraphics ($SDD_ROOT)
|
|-- EEVX.2
|-- docs
| |-- htmldocs
| |-- infohubs
| |-- legal
| |-- movies
| |-- pdfdocs
| |-- system_admin_docs
| |-- index.html
|-- MGC_HOME.{vco}
|-- SDD_HOME
|-- SDD_ADDINS
The documentation directory is either named docs, doc, or shared. The docs directory is self-
contained, in that, all links between documents (PDF and HTML) are relative. This enables you
to make a copy of the documentation and store it in any location and still have it function as a
complete tree.
Mentor Graphics applications support an optional set of variables to control different aspects of
your access to the Mentor Graphics Documentation System. These variables are stored in the
mgc_doc_options.ini file at the top of the documentation tree and are used to control the
alternate location of the documentation tree, the default HTML browser, and the default PDF
viewer. For example, you can copy the documentation tree from your software tree to a web
server, internal to your companys network.
Refer to Setting Your Documentation Location and Browser in the Mentor Graphics
Documentation System manual for more information on these variables. The manual is available
on SupportNet and in the InfoHub.
Additionally, prior to installing the documentation, you can access information relating to
documentation browser requirements from SupportNet:
