The book definition of globalization is the process by which businesses or other
organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale. Globalization to me is change. Change is something that everyone can you use a little bit of, however a lot of anything can be bad for you. To change is not always bad, but it can have some serious consequences. Majority of groups are identified as indigenous when they maintain traditions and other cultural related activities associated with a given place. Some indigenous people are settled in a given area and continue a nomadic lifestyle. Indigenous societies are established in every continent of the world. When it comes to indigenous cultures, change is disrupting their original way of life and could hinder them to continue their native ways. For my mini paper I focused on the Khoisan tribe. The Khoisan people were one of the first indigenous groups in South Africa. The Khoisan people have contributed to todays society in many different ways. Their most major contribution is their development of the click language. The click language is a distinctive linguistic characteristic with an extensive use of click consonants. Due to globalization the click language is becoming extinct. Some Khoisan tribes are being forced to speak other languages such as English and Afrikaans. These languages are not foreign, but they are not the original language spoken. Also in India a new economic policy that was initiated in 1993 became the forerunner of globalization for India. However, over the last couple of decades, the open policy has resulted in an increase of lay-offs, privatization, and heavy debts across the entire nation. There hasnt been in visible benefits of development and it surely hasnt reached the poorest places of the Indian society. The gap between the wealthy and the poor had widened due to globalization. India experienced a financial crises in 1997 because of foreign debts of poor countries. Also globalization has resulted in social turmoil in India. Drugs, trafficking of people, violence, and riots has increased. Globalization destroys identities. Before the period of Globalization, there existed free, native, different and well-defined, culturally sustaining links amongst geographical place and cultural experience. Globalization is not simply a question of relegation for indigenous peoples; it is an attack on the very basis of their way of life and livelihoods. Immense indigenous knowledge, rich culture and customs, and any hope of preserving the natural world, and a simpler, more complete way of life for future. Change is not for everyone and its up to us to figure out who does not need it.
