Farm Animals by DK Publishing, Inc.
Introducing Bubble Map Graphic Organizer worksheet
Clip boards
Elmo projector
Pencil
Writing Journal

The first part of the lesson will be done on the carpet area in front of the classroom. I will ask
the children to sit in three rows. For the second part of the lesson the students will then return
to their seats to complete their writing journal. This lesson will take 1 day to complete with
class work to follow-up.

Procedures:

a. Introduction: First, I will start with a class discussion by asking the students to identify
the picture that I am holding up; I will show a picture of a chicken. I will allow a few
minutes for responses and discussion.
Questions I will be asking:
1. What do you know about a chicken?
2. Where have you seen a chicken?
3. What animal does a chicken look like?
4. Do you know what a chicken eats?
5. Do you know where a chicken lives?

b. Developmental: Next, I will read From Egg To Chicken by Anita Ganeri. After reading, I
will have the children repeat, after me, each part of the chicken; I will point to each part of
the chicken as I say each word. I will then give directions to the students on completing the
bubble map graphic organizer. I will have students help me fill out the bubble map
organizer by asking them, A chicken has? After recording all responses on the bubble
map graphic organizer, I will have students copy responses onto their own individual
bubble map graphic organizer worksheets.

c. Concluding: Finally, I will give instructions about the class work. They will be writing in
their writing journal. This will be the assessment for the lesson. I will write one sentence

example on the board: A chicken has_____________________. The students are to write
4 or more sentences using the bubble map graphic organizer. Students will return to their
desk to work independently. When they are done, they will read their sentences to a
teacher.

Adaptations and Extensions:

Adaptations:

Extensions:

1. Make a mini Chicken Book.

2. Complete Label Parts of a Chicken worksheet.
3. Complete Life Cycle of a Chicken worksheet/poster.
4. Complete a picture book of a chicken.
5. Life Cycle of a Chicken Part Cards.

Management Considerations:

1. Whole class activity.

2. Independent class work.

I will ask students to raise their hands if they know the answer during whole class activity. If
they need help during independent work time they are to raise their hands or do a self-check by
looking on the board to see if their work matches.

I will be having certain students sit next to certain students due to special needs, behavioral
needs, and special learning abilities. Special needs student will sit with S & Ra. Behavioral
needs and special learning ability student #1 will sit with K and student #2 will sit with Re &
Si.

Reflections:

The students were very engaged in the lesson. There were many good discussions and
questions. I liked how everyone was able to contribute by saying something about the topic.
Students were interested in the topic and were focused on all parts of the lesson.

I would improve the lesson by showing a short video on chickens. A large picture of a chicken
may be posted up on the board during the lesson. Books may be provided for the children to
view after doing the lesson or placed in the library. I could vary the way I get students to
answer by having pair share. I could ask more inquiry questions in my discussion.
