Sample Problem, [Co(NH3)6]2+
[Co(NH3)6]2+ has o = 10,100 cm1 and B = 920 cm1. How many
electronic absorptions do you expect for the complex and at what
energies?
To solve this problem we first need to determine the d-electron count for the [Co(NH3)6]2+
complex.
Co NH 3 6 Co
2 6 NH 3 2
So we have cobalt(II). Since cobalt is in the ninth column of the Periodic Table, it must be
a d7 complex so we can use the d7 Tanabe-Sugano diagram from the last slide.

Sample Problem, [Co(NH3)6]2+
We have d7 [Co(NH3)6]2+
with o/B 11

High Spin Low Spin
So we expect three 2A

Tetrahedral Complexes
No inversion center Laporte selection rule does not apply more
intense absorptions than in octahedral complexes
- very intense transitions since they are Laporte and spin allowed
( ~50,000 compared to <20 L mol-1 cm-1 for d-d transitions)
- energies often depends strongly on solvent (solvatochromic) since
the charge transfer changes the dipole moment of the complex
this can be used to distinguish between charge transfer bands
and d-d transitions
permanganate is intensely
purple due to CT from O 2p
to Mn7+ d-orbital
