Complex Analysis Preliminary Exam Fall 2009

Write your codcnainc, not your actual name, on each booklet. No notes, books,
calculators, computers, cell phones, wireless, Bluetooth, or other communication
devices may be used during the exam.
All problems have equal weight. Provide complete explanations for your answers.
Any standard theorems used in your arguments should be clearly stated.

1. How many roots (counted with multiplicity) does the function

have in the unit disk D = {z : \z\ < 1} ?

2. Does there exist a closed curve 7 in C \ {0,1} such that

2nifyz(z-l) '
Either sketch such a curve and explain why it works or prove that the curve does
not exist.

3. Evaluate the real, improper integral / = dx.

y_oo l + X-2

4. Consider the conformal mapping w = f(z) = 2 + ^ and let z = x + iy, w = u + iv.

Show that the image of the circle x2 + y2 = c2, c ^ 0,1 is an ellipse ^ + p- = 1
where a,b are constants depending on c (which you should find explicitly). What
is the image of the unit circle ?

5. Let f(z) be an analytic function on C which takes values in the upper half plane,
i.e., / : C - H where H = {z = x + iy : y > 0}. Show that / is constant.

6. Let f(z) = -j and define

Prove that g(z) is an analytic function on U = {z : 2 is not an integer} which is

periodic of period 1.

7. Suppose f(z) is analytic on some neighborhood U of z = 0 and suppose that

/(0) = /'(0) = 0 but /"(0) jt 0. Show that there is an analytic function g{z) on
some neighborhood V of z = 0 such that f(z) = g{z)2 for 2 6 V.

8. Let f : D -* D be analytic, where D = {z : \z\ < 1} is the unit disk. Suppose

there are points p, q 6 D,p ^ q such that f(p) = p and f(q) = q, i.e., / has two
fixed points. Show that f(z) = 2 for all 2 D. Hint: first consider the case where
one of the fixed points is the origin, p = 0.
