Abstract

Sungyong Park, he is my brother and I choose him for the PEPSI Case Study. He is now 14 years old

and he came here in Las Vegas 3 years ago to study aboard. He lives with two of his sisters including

me. Since I am the one who staying with him most of the time period during his study aboard, I

decided to observe him for the PEPSI Case Study. I am going to cover five different areas of

development: Physical, Emotional, Philosophical, Social and Intellectual.

Physical

He is really skinny and it is his constitution that hard to gain weight. When you look at his

family then, you will know that the height and the weight are from heredity. He is now 56 height

and it is above the average compare to the United States average height for 14 years old boy, which

is 54. He weight 102 LB and this is below the average compare to 112 LB, which is the average

weight of United States 14 years old male teenager. He is now in the stage of adolescence and his

noticeable change was the voice became lower. He loved to sing since he was young. He took several

parts in the singing contest. The voice was high enough to sing a soprano. However, he doesnt like

his voice to change because he still involved in the middle school choir and he need to sing for base.

He is not good at active sports such as soccer, football of basketball. However he likes to golf and he

is in the middle school gold team.

Emotional

He is now in the Identity vs. Role confusion of Eriksons theory. This stage becoming more

independent, and begin to look at the future in terms of career, relationships, families, etc. The

individual wants to belong to a society and fit in. He started to think about his career. He wanted to

be a doctor, when he saw his uncle. His uncle is a doctor in a great practice and when he saw his

working hard; his uncle gave him an influence to have a doctor career. Another characteristic of

Identity vs. Role confusion was wants to belong to a society and fit in, and he just started to do a

social networking service. Now a day, most of the teenager into a social networking service and he

realized this will help him to involve more with his friends.

Philosophical

He came here in U.S. almost 3 years ago and before he came to study abroad, he used to live

with both of the parents in Korea. He has 2 sisters and they came here 4-7 years earlier than him. So

during that life time that he spends without siblings, his parents were able to focus to him and this

parental style is an example of authoritative. His mom intended a self-directed learning style. She

helped him to seat down for certain time to focus his homework and gave him a free time after that.

After this became a routine, he is now a self-directed student. He knows what to do first. The first

thing he does after school is doing homework. Whenever there is a test next day, he goes to sleep

earlier or he doesnt go out to play.

Social

When he was in the 5th grader, he was really shy. One day, one of his friends called him

retarded. Since it was his first year of United States, he doesnt know the meaning of the word,

however he knew it is something meaning negative because of the voice tone. After he came back

from the school, he looked up the meaning of the retarded. The dictionary meaning of retarded is

less advanced in mental, physical, or social development than is usual for one's age. He was hurt as

he knows the meaning of that word. Finally, his sister notices this and asked the teacher about some

attention to him. And I think the teacher handled the problem smart. She announced that I heard

someone in this class making fun of other friend or saying bad words and I want to tell them please

stop. She did not put one student in to spotlight and make them embarrassing and the student who

said retarded to him apologized. Now he adapted well to the school life year to year, now he has

best friends and get along each other. Recently, he created a facebook account and instagram

account. Now he communicates with not only his friends, but also with the people who have similar

habits. He likes to bake and he joined facebook group about baking.

Intellectual

When he tested the Gardners multiple intelligences, he came out Intrapersonal and

linguistic. He likes to study alone and he learns self-motivated with metacognitive processes. Also he

likes reading and writing. He liked to write a poet when he was in the elementary school. He used to

have inspired from his ordinary life. For example, he went to a zoo and saw an elephant and after he

came back from the zoo and started to write a poet about an elephant.
