The Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park

One of the core components of the Integrated Waste Management System in Sarawak is the
Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park.

The first Integrated Waste Management Park in South East Asia, this state-of-the-art facility was
designed to cater for both municipal waste and scheduled waste, including hazardous and
pathological waste.

The careful selection of environmental protection equipment and disposal technologies of highest
efficiency guarantees all of the facility components are in full compliance with both local and
international safety and environmental standards.
Preservation of natural resources and immediate as well as long-term protection of the
environment are the basis of operations at the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park.

Sanitary Landfill (for Municipal Waste)

Sanitary landfill for municipal solid waste

The Sanitary Landfill caters to the disposal of municipal waste from the city of Kuching.

Features and Specifications

The primary target of a modern landfill design is to minimize or eliminate adverse environmental
impacts arising from the disposal of municipal solid waste which typically contains a wide range
of pollutants.

To avoid any leaching of pollutants into groundwater, the landfill is constructed with a multi-layer
base sealing system, comprising of a highly impermeable sealing layer using the latest
environmental protection material, covered by geotextile and a drainage and filtration layer to
ensure undisturbed flow of the leachate wastewater into the embedded leachate collection pipes,
at all times.

Landfill gas consisting mainly of methane is extracted and collected through a web of gas
collection pipes in various levels of the landfill body. In initial stages the gas is pre-treated and
flared off for neutralization; once sufficient amounts of gas is generated, the gas extracted will be
used for power generation which will further contribute to the conservation of natural resources,
further fulfilling the main objectives of the overall facility design and operations.

Secure Landfill (For Scheduled Waste)

The Secure Landfill, designed and constructed to the highest standards caters to the disposal of
scheduled and hazardous waste.

Waste not suitable for incineration and the ashes from the Scheduled Waste Incineration
Facility are deposited in the Secure Landfill.

Here, a double-liner system has been constructed for maximum safety while the facility itself sits
on solid rock as a geological barrier.

Most stringent operating procedures and covering of the waste with impermeable material
ensures that this landfill does not have any adverse impacts on the environment or on the people
working at the facility.

Leachate from the Secure Landfill is pre-treated in a chemical treatment stage where heavy
metals are removed, before the pre-treated leachate undergoes the same extensive treatment as
the leachate wastewater from the Sanitary Landfill.
Leachate Wastewater Treatment Plant
Leachate from the sanitary and secure landfill is collected through an extensive network of pipes
then pumped to the Leachate Wastewater Treatment Plant. All leachate is treated in a multi-
stage process including biological treatment, clarifiers and activated carbon reactors as a final
polishing stage to ensure the highest treatment results. The plant is fully computerized and all
stages of the treatment process are continuously monitored; the water effectively has close to
drinking water quality when finally discharged.

Scheduled Waste Storage Facility

Trienekens interim storage facilities are constantly upgraded based on the latest tonnage data,
to facilitate better waste reception and to comply with prevailing storage capacity requirements.
Waste stored in this facility prior to disposal is maintained via a waste management database
system called Reception Inventory Management System (RIM).

Safety Features:

Containment bunds or kerbs as a safety and control measure against spillage.

Ambient air exchange and control.

Alarm, monitoring and control systems.

Epoxy painted flooring to prevent chemical permeation.
Scheduled Waste Incineration Facility
Scheduled Waste Incinerator

The scheduled waste incineration facility for the disposal and treatment of hazardous waste
consists of two fully computerised Incineration Plants. Both plants are equipped with a
continuous emissions monitoring system, and are capable of treating hazardous waste including
toxic, industrial, clinical and pathological waste.

The facilitys incineration treatment not only incinerates hazardous waste but also controls
emissions to a point that the treatment is considered to be environmentally beneficial, as
opposed to alternative methods of hazardous waste disposal. Just like in common incineration,
burning occurs, however the Plants cutting edge technology allows for digital control of the
amount of oxygen allowed in each chamber, hence controlling the combustion rate of waste
resulting in a significant reduction of any harmful bi-products and air pollutants.

Laboratory

KIWMPs full-service laboratory is capable of analysing a wide range of wastewater parameters.

Wastewater samples are collected daily from various sampling points and are analysed to check
their compliance with the various regulations and standards. With equipment ranging from simple
bench-top pH meters to complex spectrometers such as the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer
(AAS), the laboratory has the capability to carry out tests related to water and wastewater.
The laboratorys personnel has full instrumentation capabilities, providing quality analytical data
which follow methods set forth in EPA methods for Water and Wastewater, APHA (American
Public Health Association) Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater,
ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) analytical methods as well as DIN (German
Institute for Standardisation) methods.

The laboratory is also certified with ISO/IEC 17025.

Trienekens laboratory was set up intent on moderating all treatment processes and effluent
quality at KIWMP, consequently fulfilling obligatory legal requirements. Apart from internal
monitoring, compliance monitoring is also administered by appointed certified third party labs on
a quarterly basis.
