Unit 3 Expressing Interest and Boredom

Goal: Students will understand how tone of voice as well as the words chosen
indicate interest, boredom, or other emotion. They will learn some questions and
techniques to make themselves a more interesting conversationalist.

A. Pair activity: It was the way she said it (15 min)


Use the words given to practice intonation, stress and rhythm. (5 min activities p 42)
Intonation, stress and rhythm: Take one word or short sentence and ask the students to say
it in as many different ways as possible. You might like to discuss with the students what
difference the intonation makes to the meaning in each case or in what circumstances this
intonation might be used.

-Preview and predict what the topic is about. Have students look over the worksheet first to
understand the questions and predict what the spaces might be.
-Listen twice and fill in the cloze as you listen to the video. (Play at 80% speed)
-Check for comprehension
-Then in small groups, think of one or two more interesting questions to ask. This shouldnt
be a question we ask all the time, but should be different and interesting.

C. Dissection and Dialogue


-Have the students break down Conversation A1 (C. to Speak p. 19) into its basic parts
I. Greeting
II. Invitation
III. Rejection #1
IV. Encouragement (with reason)
V. Rejection #2
VI. Acceptance and Consolation
-Have time come up with a similar dialogue following this outline. Be sure to encourage them
to inject some emotion into their dialogue.
-Have pairs/threes perform their dialogue
