Annotation: This article gave useful information on different facts about birth
control, but most importantly it showed a compare and contrast between the
past, present, and future. This helped me build my timeline and understand
what changes occurred in different time periods.

Annotation: This article talked about the different time periods in which
various advancements occurred in birth control. I used this to help construct
my timeline so that I could arrange certain events in the right time period
they occurred.

1906 Friedrich Merz developed the first known commercially produced


spermicidal jelly, called Patentex.- atentex. 1930s Numerous chemicals were investigated for
potential spermicides. The work led to the setting up of standardised testing of spermicides and their
effectiveness.

1914-1921 Margaret Sanger opens first birth control clinic in Brownsville,


Brooklyn- On its opening day, 140 women visited the clinic. For the nine days it remained
open, the clinic had a total of 450 visitors, and many of the women seen offered
testimonials. This clinic helped young women to educate themselves on contraception.

1930 More effective chemicals were developed such as nonoxinol-9 . N-9 and
related compounds are ingredients in various cleaning and cosmetic products. It is widely used
in contraceptives for its spermicidal properties.

1930s and 1940s Improved understanding of ovulation and temperature


changes led to development and use of the temperature method.

a fertility awareness-based method is a type of natural family planning. Your basal body
temperature is your temperature when you're fully at rest. Ovulation may cause a slight increase
in basal body temperature

1997 The first polyurethane condom launched in U.K., this was less sensitive
to heat and humidity
1957 The FDA approves the pill and in some states stays illegal
2002 The first combined pill (Yasmin) to contain the new progestogen,
drospirenone became available
2005 Some societies didnt have access to birth control especially those
located in South Asia and third world countries.
2009 NuvaRing, a combined estrogen and progestogen ring became
available
Today More research is needed on woman-controlled methods that protect
against STIs and birth control for men. Barriers to accessing reliable
contraception remain for women worldwide. Available
