Rohan Kapur KUNDALINI INITIATES Spiritual Awakening

PURPOSE OF YOGA
After repeated practice of concentration, a stage is reached where you can easily fix your mind on
some object for a certain duration of time -- say a minute, or thirty seconds, or two minutes at a
stretch. This, now, is meditation. And one sitting in meditation, whether he meditates on the divine,
on the moon, on a light, on a lotus flower, on anything that he likes or on a beloved, or on some
principle or on some ideal or on some landscape, he is slowly changing the neuronic structure of the
brain.
There is no magic. There can be no swift formulas. There are no special techniques. There are no
back door entries. There are no secret, mysterious methods. Normal concentration and meditation
done, especially on a divine object, slowly effects the neuronic structure of a certain region in the
brain.
A time can come when suddenly, the transformation is complete -- this particular region awakens to
activity disclosing a lustrous world so exhilarating, so beautiful and so absorbing that the mind is
fixed into it. This is the eighth state of yoga, known as samadhi. Samadhi means the mystical
trance.
So now, this is actually Yoga. Yoga is not asana, Yoga is not mantra, Yoga is not drowsiness. Yoga is
not just some activity, some feeling of relaxation. Yoga is not merely efficiency. Yoga is not some
visionary experience, seeing yourself in a distant place or seeing somebody near you.
Yoga is the opening of the center in the brain creating a new awareness of a world which is so
amazing that even one glimpse of it can change the whole of life. And it is for this reason that Yoga
has been held sacred in India and it has never been used for commercial purposes.
The most profane use you can make of this lofty, of this sublime system, which is designed to
accelerate the processes of evolution, to lead man to his maker, to lead man to the knowledge of his
self, is to make commercial use of it.
All I have described to you should give you a picture of what a profound and what a complex
subject Yoga is. It is not easy, nor so cheap as it is said to be. The reason why there are failures, why
there are disappointments, why there are frustrations, why, during this age, there is a lack of the
enlightened is because wrong methods are followed and wrong versions of these methods are given
to the people at large.
Yoga is a method for the acceleration of the evolutionary processes in the human organism leading
to neuronic changes in the brain and to the awakening of a dormant center which can open a new
channel of perception for the embodied soul. When this new channel of perception opens, then the
soul knows it real nature. It is then free from the bonds of flesh and is convinced of its immorality,
its glory and its oneness with the supreme Lord of all creation. So Yoga is not just a method to find
some miraculous powers, to gain a few psychic gifts. I shall discuss that, too, to clear some
misunderstandings. It is not meant to cure some disease or just to make your body supple. You can
employ other methods for it. This is cheapening, devaluing Yoga. It is not Yoga.
Yoga is meant, as I have said, to accelerate evolution and to reach the state where you can perceive
your oneness with the universe. This is also the aim of all religious disciplines but the peculiarity
with yoga is this -- that it is a systematized discipline to which thousands must have contributed
with their lives and which has been performed for the past thousands of years.
