Bridging Gap Activities

Whole Class Activity on Description

Objectives
The children talk about their perception of the picture.
Link the picture with their experience.
Share the ideas about the picture among them.

I Greetings
Greet the children, How are you?

II Interaction.
Put the children in small groups.
Ask them to sit in 'U' shape.
Draw two lines to make the black board into three parts.
Show the picture on page No:2 (Class-III)
Elicit the responses from children about the names of the things/people
Write the group wise responses on the left side margin using small letters
(Involve all children in the
process) Ask the following
questions.
1. Name the things you see in the picture?
2. Identify different people in the picture?
3. Where are they?

(Ask a few questions to elicit the action words in the picture and write them on
the right side margin of the B.B).
1. What are the people in the picture doing?
2. What is the woman (at ticket counter) doing?
3. What is the man at tea shop doing?
4. What is the woman near the train doing?
(By showing the picture of the man with news paper in his hand)

Do not supply ideas. You may ask supportive questions and you can even
interact with the learners by using their mother tongue.
Give sufficient time to children to come out with their own ideas or
responses.

Now ask the children to do the activity - I in their notebook.


Help the children while doing their work.
Interact with the children to elicit eight to ten sentences by using words on the
left side and action words on the right side generated in the whole class.
Write the sentences in the middle of the black board (based on the action words
on the B.B)
Ask the children to read the sentences.
Let the children write down the sentences in their notebook,
Let the children write the sentences in a sequence.

Group Activity on Description

Objectives

Discuss and share their perceptions about the picture in the group.
Link the picture with their experience.
Compare their perception with other groups and teacher perception.

I Greeting
Greet the children
How are you?

II Interaction
Ask the children to observe the picture (from class -III, page No.72) carefully
and give sufficient time for it.
Ask few questions to elicit certain words related to the action of the
things and Write them on the Black board.
Make the children into the groups, ask them to share the ideas regarding the
pictures (each group should be consist with different grade students)
Let them write the sentence in their note book to get the description of the picture.
While the group work is going on, the teacher should move around and
give them feedback.
You may help them with specific vocabulary if they ask.
Ask the groups to present their version.
Prepare the teachers version and present it.

Teacher's Version

1 Birds are flying in the sky.


2 The girls are singing.
3 Oxen are under the tree.
4 The boys are playing under the tree.
5 Squirrel is climbing the tree.
6 The monkey is sitting on the branch.
7 Mother is cooking food.
8 Father is talking with the daughter.

II Editing process

(Ask the following questions and elicit the responses and edit accordingly.)

1. Is there any excess word in the sentence?

2. Is there any missing word in the sentence?

3. Do you want to change any word order?

4. Is there any difference in word form? Do you want to change it?

5. Do you want to put/change any punctuation marks?

6. What should be there in beginning of the sentences?

7. What do you put at the end of the sentences?

8. Underline the miss pelt word and ask, is the spelling correct. do you want to
change.

Let each group rewrite their description including ideas from the
teachers version and from the other group products.)

Now ask them to write in their notebooks.

Let the children put the punctuation marks, put capital letter and full stop in work sheet.

Objectives

The children will be able to think about their perception of the picture individually.
Link the picture with their experiences.
Compare his perception with others.

I Greeting

Greet the children, Good morning/afternoon children. How are you?

II Interaction

Ask the children to observe the picture on page no.107 and write words and
action words related to the names of the things in their note books individually.
And ask the children to write the sentences in their note books with words and
action words in the table.
Let them write a description on the picture in their note books.
While the individual work is going on the teacher should move to the children
and give them feedback.
You may help them with specific vocabulary if they ask.
Ask the children to sit in groups and refine the work.

Producing a description based on the picture drawn by Children.

Objectives:

Children will draw a picture and talk about the picture.


Link the picture with their experience.
Share the ideas among them.

I Greetings

Greet the children, How are you?

II Interaction on Picture Transaction process drawn by the children.

Put the children in small groups (2 or 3 in each group)


Ask the children to sit in U shape.
Draw two lines and divide the b.b. into three parts.
Ask the following questions.

1. Draw the picture of a bird (e.g. Parrot) sitting on the branch of a tree and
draw the picture of the animal (e.g.: Dog) under the tree.
2. Write the names of any birds/animals/vehicles etc., (Write all the works in the left
margin of the black board.)
3. What are the action words.(Write them on the right margin of the black board.

Now interact with the children in the following manner.

1. Which bird is this?


2. What is its colour?
3. Where is it?
4. What is it doing? etc.,

Write down the relevant responses in the middle of the black board.

Eg. This is a parrot


It is green.
It is sitting on the branch of the tree.

Ask the following questions to get the similar description about the animal.

Eg: Which animal is this?

What is its colour?

Where is it?

What is it doing? etc.

This is a dog.

It is brown.

It is standing under the tree.

Write the following responses of the children in the middle of the black board.

(Help the children while doing the above activity.)

Group Activity based on pictures drawn by the children in groups

Objectives

Discuss and share their perceptions of the picture in the group.

Link the picture with their experience.

Compare their description with other groups and the teachers description.

I Greetings

Greet the children, Good Morning, How are you?

II Interaction.

Put the children in groups let each group select any two names (one bird and
one animal/ two birds and two animals)

Ask them to think what these birds and animals are doing, draw pictures of these
actions.

Ask each group to write description on their picture and present it.

Edit any one group product (as editing process in day-2)

Let each group rewrite their descriptions including ideas from


teachers version from the other group products.

Ask the interactive questions to get the ideas writing words/action words
sentences.

The teacher should observe the descriptions of children and make changes
where ever necessary.

Objectives

The children will be children able to tell about the perception of


the picture.
Link the picture with their experience.
Share their ideas about the picture among them

I Greetings

Greet the children, How are you?

II Interaction.

Ask the children to sit in U shape in small groups.


Let them observe the picture on page no.2
Ask them to indentify the persons who are talking with each other (Conversation)
Write the responses on the B.B
Take one situation and build conversation by asking following questions.

Woman and ticket clerk

1 What is the woman asking ticket clerk?


2 What is the response of the ticket clerk?
3 What does the woman says next?
4 What does clerk says next?

Display the following conversation in the class (Teachers version)

Conversation between women and ticket clerk

Woman : Please give me one ticket to Hyderabad.


Clerk : Give me money?
Women : How much?
Clerk : 50 rupees
Woman: : Take this money.
Clerk : Take this ticket
Woman : Thank you
Clerk : It is ok.

Conversation based on the picture -2 (class-III page.no.72)

Objectives

Children will be able to find situations for conversation


Children will share their ideas in the group.
Children will develop the dialogues between the characters.

I Greetings

Greet the children, How are you?

II Interaction to develop the conversation.

Let the children sit in groups (each group 5 children).


Ask the children to observe the picture.
Ask the children to identify a situation in the picture.
Ask the children to identify two characters from the situation, and name the
characters.
Ask them to write a conversation as we did in whole class.
Move around when they are doing group work give suggestions accordingly.
Mean while prepare a teacher version.
Give sufficient time to prepare and also make all the children to participate
in group.
Ask one group to present the conversation prepared by them.

Teachers version

Conversation between mother and child in the picnic

Child : Mother, what are you cooking?

Mother : I am cooking food for you.

Child : Mother which curry are you preparing?

Mother : Brinjal.

Child : Oh I like it very much, make it. I am hungry.

Mother : It will take only 10 minutes to complete.

Child : Ok Ma I will call brothers and sister.

Mother : O.K. go.

Ask the following questions to help the children to refine their work.

Refine the group by asking different questions.

Ask them to write the refined work in their note books.

Let the pupil do the activity-I

Assign the roles and ask them to practice the dialogues and let the
children perform the role plays.

II Interaction to develop the conversation individually.

Ask the children to observe the picture in page No.107 in class III.
Let the children find a situation and write a conversation between the characters.
Move around the class, facilitate the children to find the situation and write the

Interact with the by asking the following question to develop the conversation

1 Who are there in the picture?


2 What is the grandmother doing? What is she saying?
3 What is the mother doing? What is she saying to her child?
4 Write the conversation between them.

Objectives

Talk about the perception of the picture


Link the picture with their experience.
Share their ideas about the picture among them.

II Interaction to develop the conversation and role play.

Ask the children to sit in 'U' shape in small groups.


Let them observe the picture.
Ask them to identify the persons/characters who are talking to each other.
Write the responses on the black board.
Take one situation and build conversation by asking the following questions.

1. What are the characters in the picture?


2. What is the first character saying to the second character?
3. What is the second character saying to the first?
4. What happened next?

Prepare a conversation basing on the children responses.


Assign the characters to the children.
Ask them to practice dialogues as per assigned characters.
Finally let the children perform the role play.

Let the children sit in groups (Maintain 4-5 children in each group.)

Ask the children to observe the picture.

Ask the children to identify any two characters from the situation. Name the
characters.

Write a conversation between two characters.

Ask them to write a conversation as they did in the whole class activity.

Move around when they are doing group work, give suggestions accordingly.

Give sufficient time to think and answer. Let all the children participate in
the group activity.

Ask one group to present the Conversation prepared by them.

Refine the group work.

Ask them to write in their note books.

Assign the role and let the children practice the dialogue and let the
children perform the role play.

Ask 2 to 3 students to present the conversation.

Ask the children to refine their work on the basis of the input they received.

Let the children perform the role play as earlier.

Writing a story based on the picture
Objectives

Children will be able to identify the characters and imagine their dialogues.
Children will be able to identify the events what happened before and
what happens next from the picture.

I Greeting
Greet the children, How are you?

II Interaction
Divide the black board in 3 parts.
Show the picture let them identify the characters.
Ask the children what is happening in the picture and write the event on
the middle of the Black Board.
Let them guess what happened before and then write on the left side of the Black
Board
And ask them again what happened next and so on.
Elicit the responses/related to all events and write them on the right side of
the black board.
Let the children guess a dialogue/self talk between each event.
Write all events of dialogues in the middle of the black board.
While writing a story, an event with dialogues it will become a story.
Elicit the responses by asking the questions write the responses on the
black board.
Ask the children to present what they have written and edit the children
product by the process given below.

Show the picture.
Draw margins on the both sides of the black board. Ask
the following question.

1 What are the characters in the picture?


(boy and dog)

2 What is happening in the picture?


(The dog is trying to bite the boy)

3 Guess what might have happened before this?


(The child beat the dog with a stone)

4 Before that what was the boy doing before that?


(He was going to the ground to play)

5 What happened then?


(He saw a dog on the road)

6 What did he think?


( I will throw a stone at the dog)

7 What happened next?


(The boy picked a stone up and threw it at the dog)

8 What happened next?


(The dog barked Bow-Bow and thought who threw the stone at me, it is paining)

9 What happened next?


(The dog ran towards the boy to bite)

10 What did the boy think then?


('Oh my God, the dog is coming to bite. I will run from here")

11 What happened next?


(He started running)

12 Later dog reached the boy tried to bite him but it could catch only his short.

13 After that the boy escaped from there by saying "help help".

Show them the picture which tells a story.


Make the children in to groups.
Ask them identify the characters and events.
Let them discuss in their groups.
Facilitate them by moving around and ask the following questions.

1. What is happening in the picture?


2. What might have happened before this?
3. What will happen next?
4. Guess the dialogues between each event and write in sequence.

Ask them to present their group work one by one.


Edit the story of any one of the group product.
