Group 3

The scores for Group 1 seem mostly to be clustered between 1 and 9, with
modes at 1, 6, and 8, in addition to a mode at 14. This group has the highest single
score of any group, but also has more scores of 5 or less than any of the other
groups combined.

The majority of the data for Group 2 is between 8 and 15, with a mode at 8.
Group 3 has a mode at 6, with most of the remaining data points somewhat evenly
distributed between 5 and 15.
b.
c. Group 1 is skewed to the right. There are no obvious outliers based on
the histogram. There is a gap in the histogram as the bin for data
points between 9 and 12 is empty.
Group 2 is bimodal, though it also seems somewhat skewed right. It
seems possible that one of the data points in the furthest to the left bin
could be an outlier. There is again a gap in the histogram; in this case
the bin between 3 and 6 is empty.
Group 3 is skewed right. Nearly all of the data points occur to the right
of the mode.

d.

Group 1 has the largest range, the largest interquartile range and the lowest
median, indicating that there was high variation, but that the bulk of the scores
were lower than in the other groups.
Group 2 also has a large range, but is clearly higher scoring overall than
Group 1, with its first quartile being higher than the median of Group 1.
Group 3 has a smaller range than the other groups, which would seem to
imply that it is more reliable. Group 3 clearly outscores Group 1, but also seems to
be less high scoring within the interquartile range than Group 2.

e.
Group 1: x =7.7, Median=7, Modal Class :3 6

Group 2: x =10.55 , Median=10 , Modal Class : 6 9

Group 3: x =9.25 , Median=9 , Modal Class:3 6

(Data calculated with TI-84)

For each data set, the mean is just slightly larger than the median. This
makes sense with a skewed right histogram, like the ones seen above.
Group 2 has the highest measures of center, with both the mean and
median larger than in any other set.
f.

Group 1: s 5.17, IQR=7.5, Range=17

Group 2: s 4.36, IQR=6.5, Range=16

Group 3: s 3.26, IQR=6, Range=10

(Data calculated with TI-84)

Group 1 has the most variation and Group 3 has the least variation, no
matter which measure of spread is used.

g. It is definitely clear that Group 1 was the least successful method, the
least consistent, with the lowest measures of center. Group 2, with the
highest measures of center would probably be considered the best.
Though it is slightly less consistent than Group 3, with a couple of low
test scores, Group 2 also has nearly the same interquartile range as
Group 3, and so can be seen as nearly as consistent for the middle
50%.

2. I asked members of my 9th grade Algebra 1 class, and two 11th grade Algebra
2 classes what their favorite subjects in school were. Many students did not
respond (I asked them to write their answer, without their name, on a sheet
of paper and turn it in after class), so there is some sampling bias in this data,
as only students who voluntarily responded are included in the data set. 44
students responded in total.

After grouping together some responses, I found, somewhat unsurprisingly for a

vocational school, that the favorite subject of the students in this survey was their
shop. Science, math, and physical education were the next group down, with
between 14 and 18 percent of students choosing one of these subjects as their
favorite. Shop, which was a grouping combined from several different responses
(ranging from Culinary to Robotics to Plumbing), was the overall favorite, but even
that came in at only 27.3 %
