Fun fact! It’s Rohit!
Cindy – Randomly Informational
Wendy – the smarty participates
Tevita – Efficiency
Jiwei – Focus energies on edu issue that interests him; do more in-depth research; offer different arguments
Thomas – “You’re not just smart, you’re clever,” he can speak about it; apply yourself more; ability to surpass people
Layhannara – Think & present in comprehensive fashion; learn to facilitate thought processes in mind; educate others
Suzy – Unique perspectives; well-rounded person; pick out interesting things; take more of an initiative on things (be on
forefront); be careful on words (maybe offensive); very dedicated person
Ross – agreed with everything; admire Rohit’s ability to read and understand something right away and articulate it;
ability to communicate

WOW! It’s Cindy – We all challenge commission individually; emotional support group- mentors aside from academic
aspects; be proud of one’s achievements instead of focusing on problems ahead; mutual support
Wendy – Has her own stand, personality; Maybe talk more 
Tevita – thinks Rohit and Cindy worked well together; hold more work group meetings
Jiwei – nice and caring person; genuinely passionate (ex: feminist issues); share more during meetings (share your
passion so others can connect to it)
Thomas – Cool and collected person; thinks quickly; push Rohit more
Layhannara – Perceptive, intellectual; in tune with dynamics and other’s personalities – an ability that can be harnessed
in speaking with others more; (recalled last retreat when Cindy saw herself as a follower) FALSE! Haha “I really think you
have naturally leadership skills that you need to come out upon… don’t be afraid… take action;” suggested seeing us as
someone who can help her become a leader
Suzy – in speaking, Cindy is a very relatable person; can practically do anything she puts herself to; ability to pinpoint
essence of ideas without flowery words; suggest sharing unintentionally kept-to-herself thoughts
Ross – Strong beliefs and passion; challenge rest of staff and help us be critical about our beliefs
Rohit – Yay as a partner; “kickass leadership…push me!”; more bonding times, get to know each other

Wendy’s turn 
Tevita – Super bubbly – you seem happy all the time. Always make us laugh, positive spirit. Sometimes you are serious,
but we can’t tell. Recommendation: try not to laugh sometimes so that you are taken more seriously. Use our
experience to learn from us to become a better student leader.
Jiwei: always nice that you are always smiling, the fact that you are in aac as a freshman shows motivation and
dedication to academics and success. Recommendation: sometimes you are not that focused, (after story) you are a
really strong person.
Thomas: you are extremely ambitious, wild card in the group. Recommendation: tone it down, find ways to reduce the
stress, sleep more.
Layhannara: when I first talked to you, you were really willing to share, trying to figure out who you are, and it was brave
of you. Your ambition and cheer is much needed, and it is an energy that is needed. In some cases, you are sometimes
too nice, and you need to be more careful, with what you share with people. Too trusting of people, it can hold you back
in a lot of different spaces. Assess someone before you trust them. Learn from everyone here, you bring a lot of
perspective from your peers.
Suza: find a true passion, what is that one thing that you care for, you will grow more if you find a few things that really
interest you, and you shouldn’t feel obligated to certain spaces bc you have committed to them. Even if you take
initiative, you don’t necessarily challenge yourself, really question yourself, rather than passing on “I don’t know.”
Challenge the life around you and don’t take things for face value. Take the opportunity as a learning process.
Ross: really organized, recommendation: communication – you speak well, another side to communication is the
listening aspect – take what people give to you, and process that, and think before you speak.
Rohit: I admire your innocence, happy outlook. I don’t want to see that destroyed, and be careful with trusting people.
College is an experience, don’t miss out. Be careful with who you trust, because you need people to turn to, not only to
have you to count on.
Cindy: learn to have people earn your trust, rather than trusting them right off the bat. Also, you come off as a happy
person, and you don’t want people to be sad, so you apologize for your actions and feelings, and I would recommend
that you let your actions explain themselves rather than explaining it.

Tevita: need to update more, trying to provide support: hold staff accountable, update regularly, update the commission
Jiwei: you are a fun guy, really smart, valuable contributions to the commission, creative ideas. Rec: applying yourself
more, great potential
Thomas: you seem more responsible (peer counseling), give really sound advice. Rec: hold Thomas more accountable
towards the commission, on the committee.
Lay: good at follow-up on recommendations, doing research, supervision not necessary. Try to filter this into your staff –
taking more initiative to do that. Strength: good at giving recommendations, natural ability to defend yourself without
offense. Rec: continue doing what you’re doing, take initiative
Suza: bringing in relevance of different spaces, take direction well, rec: try to find a sense of direction, talking with
people to develop that
Ross: great communication, from counseling and life experiences. Being able to listen and relate to people. Rec: stay
awake, be focused.
Rohit: grown a lot, took on more responsibilities.
Cindy: Connect well with people, wise outlook, more maturity, recommend: utilize your knowledge to help people
Wendy: FBI agent, nice, chill, down to earth, smart, mature
Jiwei: has realized what lies in student power within this office and how much we can affect a lot around campus, feels a
lot more empowered because of how much other spaces rely on USAC so much
Thomas: likes your presenting skills, present yourself well, communicates very well. Recommendation – find others to
help you because it’s hard to take on so much responsibility
Lay: very willing to try new things and very enthusiastic, has a lot of potential to go far. Weakness/Recommendation –
need to find a balance because you take on a lot of things upon yourself, not enough time in the day because your
involved in many things
Suza: carries very good perspective, big picture person, looks out for others, willing to take on a lot of responsibility,
personally you can work very efficiently. Recommendation – connect yourself to the issues so as to draw more from it
Ross: genuine about what you speak about, really cool, good communicator. Recommendation – balance and stress
relief
Rohit: you’re his hero, very involved and cool. Recommendation – find others to help you
Cindy: good communicator, cares about your issues but doesn’t seem to connect very well, but knows you can connect,
just the way you present yourself. Recommendation – find a way to present that you do connect
Wendy: as bubbly as her, smiles a lot, appear to be very excited but then over it
Tevita: Cool person, funny, non-lame meeting, friendly, hero because of accomplishments, motivate others to
accomplish, hard worker, recommendation: taking on too many things, balance, ask for help from staff,

Thomas: Weakness: Don’t procrastinate, take action, Contributions: Talked to professors about budget cuts and was
really enthusiastic, contribute to a happy space.
Layhannara: Genuinely excited about issues, Recommendation: Carry on excitement and make issues more relevant to
your person. Attend more meetings. Find an issue you are passionate about and then go above and beyond in pursuing
this activity. Positive: Presence is still very much felt,
Suza: Don’t overburden, insightful
Ross: Strong desire to learn, sincere when speaking, recommendations: talk more to others and help others grow
Rohit: Kickass person, want to learn, want to do, recommendations: Step up, prioritize
Cindy: Know a lot more than you show, recommendations: Talk to us more
Tevita: Cool person, eagerness to learn, willingness to admit and learn from mistakes, recommendation: like to get super
involved but maybe taking on too much, set realistic goals, stay on track
Wendy: Considerate person, tries to understand other person, nice person, recommendation: Be more confident
Jiwei: Cool under pressure, reliable, adapts quickly, recommendation: take on more responsibility, ask more, challenge
yourself more

Lay: Growth: Tactful, value honest but now understand that certain situations require more tact, learned how to frame
message better, consult and depend on mentors, and learned to ask for help. Weakness: Want to collaborate with other
student leaders, mentor staff better
Ross: Knowledgeable, challenging, ask the right questions, help with staff development. Recommendation: Be more
logistically sound
Rohit: Laid back leadership style, but get things done, helped us all grow
Cindy: Serious commission but you have a good sense of humor, treat us all as equals
Tevita: Super involved, never stressed out, good balance, organized, recommendation: Don’t be afraid to be strict, set
deadline
Wendy: Lay and Suza cool and funny ghetto language, understanding
Thomas: Nice, concerned, recommendation: be strict
Suza: Grow so much, fully dedicated, tend to overexert yourself, balance time with commission and relationships outside
of commission, become more politically savvy, don’t take everyone as your enemies, build relationships, don’t take
things personally
Jiwei: Down to earth, understanding, very comfortable to be around, approachable, tactful, never would’ve guessed you
were an angry person, recommendation – sometimes too understanding, don’t be afraid to put a little more pressure on
us and kick our ass!!!

Suza: I expected to learn different strategies in dealing with professional people, used to collective agreement, wanted
to learn how to advocate on behalf myself and the students, but have not developed own strategy, want to develop
more eloquence and speed up processing time.
Ross: Organized, leader, strong, speak your mind, know history and background, ghetto, very caring, super
understanding
Rohit: Good facilitation skills help others develop their skills
Cindy: Good at giving constructive criticism. Recommendation: Connect on a more personal level with each other
Tevita: Passionate, big presence, recommendations: Be strict and have more concrete deadlines. Keep us accountable
Wendy: Funny, nice, more understanding, really organized, good at balance, learning from Suza
Thomas: Tactful, keep us grounded, recommendations: Logistically be more on top of things
Lay: Honor and privilege to know for a long time, keep (Lay) on my toes, challenging as a friend and leader, devoted, not
afraid to follow you, amazing leader, recommendations: Trust yourself and your gut, lose yourself in work and forget to
care about self
Jiwei: Not expecting you, but you turned out to be a super organized and really cool, feisty, tough, come across as a
leader, recommendations – be tougher on us, check up on us, when we have events/retreats and such just plan a little in
advance

Ross: Wanna stray away from my “I’m over it” attitude, wanna concentrate on school work
Rohit: Admires you because you are an RA, really great communicator, recommendations – wanna learn from you
Cindy: Really perceptive of ppl’s qualities and willing to tell them, recommendations – can take on more responsibilities
Jiwei: Very cool, come across as very meticulous, really knows your stuff, has a quiet confidence, when you talk ppl
listen, valuable output, recommendations – try harder to be more vocal
Wendy: Feel like you analyze ppl too much, surrounded by a barrier, quiet, cool, recommendations – thin your barriers
Thomas: Cool demeanor, more defined because of experience, recommendations – speak more so we can learn from
you
Lay: One of the most reliable person she knows, good communication skills, good at updating us on your status, very
eager, committed, recommendations – don’t be afraid to pick an issue and go with it, go out with a big bang
Suza: Wow’ed by your application, so many skills without letting other ppl know, saw you as able to be in other positions
but respected your desire to be in design/media, recommendations – take more lead, don’t limit yourself
Tevita: Profound sayings, cool person, quiet confidence, everything you say is relevant, “I’m over it” attitude, wise guy,
share your wisdom

Proposal-Writing Workshop
Purpose of a proposal: tell someone else your purpose and desires; usually to get money; define objectives; unique;
based on the request and need; to clarify what you want and why; contains background and lays down a precedent for
others to use in the future
How can you use proposals as a tool? Submission of requests
Who could you submit them to? Governing bodies, people who can influence decision-making policies
Examples: Diversity requirement proposal and ECP removal proposal
Key aspects of a proposal:
1. executive summary: provides highlights, purpose for proposal, what you are asking for concisely
2. background: history, causes that lead to proposed item
3. proposed item: a concise paragraph of exactly what you are proposing, what it does
4. rationale: justification of need for proposal, proof that it is necessary, what are the pre-existing conditions that make
it necessary, does it adhere to the UCLA mission, how does it advance the goals of the university?
5. implementation: plan of action, requirements for the proposal to happen, what needs to exist for implementation to
occur, who needs to be involved (resources and stakeholders), what does the timeline look like
6. appendix: provides proposal with buffer, supporting documents including statistics, support letters, articles
Cindy & Rohit meetings @3pm; week 4 feedback; adjustment week 5; week 6-7 sources for donors, redraft proposal

 Still searching for student stats, not begun proposal yet

 Leave Summary blank and outline it so you can begin working (easy-hw-problems-first concept)
 Discussion over Covel Ser vices
 Whatever step of proposal, feel free to let us know if you need feedbacks

Tevita, Thomas – meetings Monday @ 11-12 or Weds as needed; still drafting with statistics hopefully by next Friday

 Open slots next Friday for data (now data is from basic sources)
 Want to be done by fourth week & want feedback and editing (tense, grammar etc.)
 Other UCs like Merced and SC have apps for priority enrollment (UCLA doesn’t; no contact whatsoever)
 1-on-1 wanted and time arrangements needed; Suza offers feedback
 Lay agreed they need it done before it goes on agenda, hurry it up!
 When we set proposals, look for faculty or people who supports the proposals
o Maybe there’s support from students
o Tevita asked for help from everyone who has connections (Dorothy)
 Include NCES (Non-traditional enrollment students) who has financial problems is an extensive amount of $$
o Quote but stay away from it as much as possible
o Different stresses
o Relieve them by giving them party enrollment
o Lay : AB540 – look into legalities of it in case you get in trouble
 Suza – AB540 students are legally certified, not a problem
 Traditional stresses for non-traditional students at this current times
o Jiwei: important to include AB540
 Suzy: change and enforce proposal
 Rationale
o Rest of the commission can help canvas voting members on the idea of AB540
 Can the rest of staff edit the proposal that will be emailed out

Jiwei

 Researched the pre-law programs at the other UCs

o UCLA has the 2nd worse program among the UCs
o Other UCs have internships for pre-law; ex: UCSD has a law academy offered by poli sci dept.
o We have pre-law advisors at the career center, but are general and are not much help
o UCD and UCSB have dedicated pre-law counselors
o Research to support case to expand pre-law support programs at UCLA
o Knowledge of these other programs will give options to present
 Main goal is to expand pre-law advising
 No deadlines yet; will wait for after meeting
 Feedback/Recommendations:
o Great research about other schools, what’s going on here
o When meeting with the dean of admissions, bring in plans on how they can help
o Get a person from the law society to go with you because they may have specific concerns to build
relations for future collaborations
o Ask for suggestions from law society EVP or the dean
