Adult, Childrens & Gift

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Someone recently asked me, Who are the heroes in the Chronicle Books story?
Of course, I immediately point to the many talented authors, artists, and designers
who have contributed to our success over the years. I am also proud of our exception-
ally gifted and dedicated team who ensure everything we create, market, and sell is
distinctly Chronicle in its look and feel. But without the many inventive and loyal
retailers with whom we work, Chronicle Books would not be what it is today, fifty
years since our start. The support we have received from you, our customers, is as
resolute and passionate as ever, a tremendous asset for which we are truly grateful.

As we celebrate fifty years of publishing, Im in awe of how far weve come since our
inception back in the heady days of San Franciscos Summer of Love when we made
a commitment to see things differently. Weve published more than 7000 titles, in-
cluding myriad gift formats, and received numerous awards and accolades. We have
transformed from a regional press into a leading international publisher of illustrated
adult and childrens books and a pioneer of groundbreaking gift formats. Weve chal-
lenged ourselves to sell our books around the globe, in bookstores, museum shops, and
gift stores large and small, from specialty stores to farm stands, wineries, toy stores,
and even car washes. We love when people tell us they see our books everywhere.

As we look ahead to the future, we will continue to build upon our many achievements
of these past fifty years. Thank you for your partnership and your love of what we do
here at Chronicle Books. We are passionate about what we doand we look forward
to another fifty years of bringing you the beauty, surprise, and delight that
is Chronicle Books.

Edited by Ruth Hobday, Geoff Blackwell, Sharon Gelman & Marianne Lassandro Photographs by Kieran Scott

Two hundred women from a variety of backgrounds are asked the same five questions. Their answers are inspiring human stories of
success and courage, love and pain, redemption and generosity. From well-known activists, artists, and innovators to everyday

view is accompanied by a photographic portrait, resulting in a volume that is compelling in word and imageand global in its scope
and resonance. This landmark book is published to coincide with an immersive traveling exhibition and an interactive website, build-
ing on this remarkable, ever-evolving project. With responses ranging from uplifting to heartbreaking, these women offer gifts of

By Suzy Lee
It starts with a line. Whether made by the tip of a pencil
or the blade of a skate, the magic starts there.
And magic once again flows from the pencil and imagina-
tion of internationally acclaimed artist Suzy Lee. With the
lightest of touches, this masterwork blurs the lines between
real and imagined, reminding us why Lees books have
been lauded around the world, recognized on New York
Times Best Illustrated Books lists and nominated for the
Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest international
honor given to childrens book creators. This seemingly
simple story about a young skater on a frozen pond will
charm the youngest of readers while simultaneously
astounding book enthusiasts of any age.

From award-winning author Dave Eggers comes one of the
most important childrens books of the year.

Every time every we see the Statue of Liberty in

pictures, or any time we imagine the Statue of
Liberty, we see her standing still. Very still. Like,
well, a statue.

But she is moving. She weighs 450,000

pounds, and she is moving. How can we all
have missed this? Or even if we saw this, and
noticed this, how is it that we have seen and
noticed a 450,000-pound human on her way
somewhere and said, Pshaw. Just another 150-
foot woman walking off a 150-foot pedestal?
from Her Right Foot

Her Right Foot

By Dave Eggers Illustrated by Shawn Harris

The Statue of Liberty was conceived many years ago in

the late 1800s, but its meaningof unity, of welcome,
of acceptancehas never been more relevant.

This moving, profound book tells the story of one of the

worlds architectural triumphs. Its a story that begins with
an individual mans idea for the statue and continues
through its creation on both sides of the Atlantic as a team
of visionaries join hands to build a monument to freedom
Dave Eggers is the author of The Circle, A Hologram for the King,
a monument whose right foot is the perfect symbol for all and Heroes of the Frontier, among other books. He is the founder

the wide variety of works she has created since then. The
carefully researched text, paired with ample photos, crosses
multiple interestsAmerican history, civic activism, art his-
tory, and cultural diversityand offers a timely celebration
of the memorials 35th anniversary as well as providing an
important contribution to the current discussion of the role
of women and minorities in society.

How to Swear Around the World features dozens of favorite curses,
insults, and sayings from all over the globe. Get rid of a pesky hanger-on

THE WORLD
in Brazil by telling him to dig for potatoesvai ceifar batatas. To express
disgust toward your brown-nosing German friend, accuse him of being
a bicycle-riderradfahrer, or tell someone off in Laos by letting him know
you think his mother enjoys keeping intimate company with dogsMa
see mea mung! Make new friends and enemies abroad with this handy
guide filled with fighting words, scatological expressions, dozens of ways
to insult someones mother, and many other suitably offensive phrases.

Jason Sacher is a writer and illustrator living in the wilds of southern Maine. He
has long been an admirer of curse words and their many uses, although he is troubled
by the increasing frequency with which those words are vehemently hurled at him
by friends, acquaintances, and members of his household. He figures he must just
have one of those faces. You can read Jasons comics at www.picnicspirit.com.
