Analyze how the myths are being used in the poems, Circes power by Louise Gluck and

Alunsina Takes a Walk by Conchitina Cruz. Draw some similarities and differences in their use

of theme, images and linguistic.

The poems Alunsina takes a walk and Circe power has several similarities and differences. They

are both poems based on myths, alumina based from a Visayan myth while Circes is a Greek

myth. The underlying theme of the poems how can love can make a person powerful or

powerless. In Circes power, she is someone who has all the power but cant make one man stay,

so in this statement If I wanted only to hold you, I could hold you prisoner. (Gluck,25-26)

this is just her way telling of accepting that she is powerless in the situation or what you call

reverse bittering. Meanwhile in Alunsina take a walk is the reverse scenario of Circes power;

where she is the one being beg by the Powerful Husband to stay. This line of the poem tells

Today, the news tells me you are scheduled to be lonely. I part my curtains and look up.

(Cruz, 4-5) for someone who was stripped out of the power asserts more power than person who

has the all the power in the world. Alunsina took on direct bittering or someone directly take

great lengths to get her revenge on her husband despite all the effort and someone enjoying to

hurt the emotions of others.

The both poems use various images to describe their emotions. In Alunsina takes a walk, it uses

various natural elements to prove describe their emotions. One example of that, the clear night

sky/the stars mapping out your single instruction: go home. (Cruz, 1) which is saying that I

miss you and I love you, go back to me. In contrast, Circes Power used parts of the icons where

she is famous from to explain emotions, for example I never turned anyone into a pig. /Some

people are pigs; I make them Look like pigs.(Gluck,1-3) Which in Greek mythology, she is

famous on making men as pigs but what this context said pigs are a metaphor for dirty and they

are already dirty and she used her skills to make them look dirtier.

The short story the lottery and destructors show that commonly reactions of the people in terms

of tradition and change. In The lottery, Mrs. Tessie is a character of change or rebel for the unjust

traditions. "You didn't give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It

wasn't fair! (Jackson,pp )she is the only person openly say that the tradition is unfair thus in

the end she is stoned; In real world people who try to rebel against tradition will be consider as

an outcast and a fool. while the Old Man Warner is the symbolism for manipulator bigot on

tradition and change can be, disastrous which can be proven in this line Used to be a saying

about 'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.' First thing you know, we'd all be eating stewed

chickweed and acorns,(Jackson,). while the black box and the tradition is describing as

Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still

remembered to use stones.(Jackson,). despite the changes of the black box, the value of

tradition is strong that is imprinted in the hearts of people and force of habit can make things

harder to change and tradition sometimes lost some it meaning over time but we still do it.

While, the short story the destructors , the Old misery is oblivious to the kids which show in

this line I got some chocolates, Mr. Thomas said. Dont like em myself (Greene,).

which means he is trusting to people and doesnt know how much the generation changes with

all the disaster happening to youth such as blackie and Trevor are youths who has been shattered

by the disasters around them so they decided to destroy the old mans house which is the only

house wasnt shattered during the war and this line so the story He had at once the impression

of organization, very different from the old happy-go-lucky ways under his leadership

(Greene, ) and the house is symbolize the past and anything reminding it must be destroyed.

Poems and almost synonymous to songs but Poems are just spoken while song are meant to be

singing but the structure of poem and songs is almost similar, it follows style, rhythm, theme and

imagery. In the song of bob Dylan times they are changing it talks about that younger

generation is misunderstood by the people in the older generation especially in the lines:

Come mothers and fathers/Throughout the land/And don't criticize/What you can't

understand ,Your sons and your daughters /Are beyond your command (Dylan,

While it is the message for us that there shall no generation gap and learn from people with

young people and old people alike. Old people are think are so wise and politicians knows better

but they are just standing their own ivory tower called pride. Older doesnt mean they are wiser

and they are the boss, they tend to boss around the youth with knowing who they are. Adults just

assume we know nothing and cant contribute anything. But when you look at the history when it

is written it is during the Vietnam war where a lot of people died and the government and the

people supports on it, it can also be a rebel song for the injustices happening before.

To get the people to get catch on with song, it uses rhymes with AABB structure because it sticks

faster to our brains for example in this line: The line it is drawn the curse it is cast, the slow one

now Will later be fast. it also uses images and metaphors to cast or make the audience stimulate

their brains like in this line:

Come gather 'around people, wherever you roam and admit that the waters Around you have

grown and accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone (Dylan,)

Which waters symbolizes as comfort zone and the you will be drenched to bone means one of

this days you will be drown by it because thing will change and it is far from it is used to.

There are several imageries in the novel God of small things that make the plotline

progressing. One of which is the moth that papachi discovered "Its pernicious ghost gray,

furry and with unusually dense dorsal tufts haunted every house that he ever lived in. It

tormented him and his children and his children's children"(Roy,) it is some sort of

foreshadowing about the with one mistake, it can cause bitterness of ones heart. It is also the

source of misery the people around. Another imagery in the novel is the paradise and pickle

factory which symbolizes are the memories bottled up inside and can last longer than the usual.

The family took great lengths to hide the stench of the family to the public. While the definition

of time can be found in Rahel wrist watch and this paragraph. had the time painted on it. Ten

to two. One of her ambitions was to own a watch on which she could change the time

whenever she wanted to.(Roy,) Is like an analogy to the structure of the story sequencing

where time and narration is jumble up and time also stops or at least to the mentality of people

around them when sophie mol arrive and die, life stops keeps moving forward and they cant

move on to a loss of favorite family member. Furthermore, Chacko describe history and

angolism and history in the form of the history house with the following description because

we've been locked out. And when we look in through the windows, all we see are shadows.

And when we try and listen, all we hear is a whispering. And we cannot understand the

whispering, because our minds have been invaded by a war. (Roy,). The house symbolizes

as the past and people wont be able to know it full and all the can see are fragments and

mysteries of the past and with the war messed up the mentality of people. There will always be a

various speculation in the past due to the clues left behind by the people of the past.
