Alternating Current (2016-2010)

1. When an AC source is connected to an ideal capacitor, show that the average power supplied by the
source over a complete cycle is zero.
2. A bulb is connected in series with a variable capacitor and an AC source as shown. What happens to
the brightness of the bulb when the key is plugged in and capacitance of the capacitor is gradually
reduced?

3. In a series LCR circuit connected to an A.C. source of voltage v = Vmsint, use phasor diagram to derive
an expression for the current in the circuit. Hence, obtain the expression for the power dissipated in
the circuit. Show that power dissipated at resonance is maximum.

4. In a series LCR circuit, VL = VC VR. What is the value of power factor?

5. You are given three circuit elements X, Y and Z. When the element X is connected across an A.C. source
of a given voltage, the current and the voltage are in the same phase. When the element Y is
connected in series with X across the source, voltage is ahead of the current in phase by /4. But the
current is ahead of the voltage in phase by /4 when Z is connected in series with X across the source.
Identify the circuit elements X, Y and Z. When all the three elements are connected in series across
the same source, determine the impedance of the circuit. Draw a plot of the current versus the
frequency of applied source and mention the significance of this plot.

6. Why is the use of A.C. voltage preferred over D.C. voltage? Give two reasons.
7. A voltage V=V0sin t is applied to a series LCR circuit. Derive the expression for the average power
dissipated over a cycle. Under what condition is (i) no power dissipated even though the current flows
through the circuit, (ii) maximum power dissipated in the circuit?

8. In a series LCR circuit connected to an A.C. source of variable frequency and voltage = Vmsint,
draw a plot showing the variation of current (I) with angular frequency () for two different values
of resistance R1 and R2 (R1 > R2). Write the condition under which the phenomenon of resonance
occurs. For which value of the resistance out of the two curves a sharper resonance is produced?
Define Q-factor of the circuit and give its significance.

9. The figure shows a series LCR circuit with L = 5.0 H , C= 80F and R= 40 connected to variable
frequency 240 V source . Calculate
a. The resonating angular frequency
b. Current at resonating angular frequency
c. The rms potential drop across the capacitor at resonance.

10. Derive an expression for the impedance of a series LCR circuit connected to an AC supply of variable
frequency. Plot a graph showing variation of current with the frequency of the applied voltage.
Explain briefly how the phenomenon of resonance in the circuit can be used in the tuning
mechanism of a radio or a TV set.

11. A voltage V=V0sin t is applied to a series LCR circuit. Derive the expression for the average power
dissipated over a cycle. Under what condition is (i) no power dissipated even though the current flows
through the circuit, (ii) maximum power dissipated in the circuit?
