1. SCOPE

This Code of Practice applies the principles established by the Company


Safety Rules to achieve Safety from the System for personnel working in
bunkers / silos, feeders and connecting chutes.

2. DEFINITIONS

Terms printed in bold type are as defined in the Company Safety Rules.

3. PLANT / APPARATUS IDENTIFICATION

PLANT / APPARATUS should be readily identifiable or have a means of


identification attached to it which will remain effective throughout the work.

4. DANGER

The main DANGERS to personnel in bunkers, silos feeders and chutes are:

Being struck or buried by material fed into the bunkers or from the
collapse of such material hung up in the bunker or silo.
Poisoning due to the presence of toxic gasses.
Burning by coming into contact with stored hot or burning material.
Falling.

5. WORK IN BUNKERS / SILOS

Before entry into any bunker / silo with the associated outlet feeder in or out
of service, full / partially full or empty, then a Risk Assessment must be
made and if required, a Method Statement written. Reference should be
made to Code of Practice Access to Confined Spaces procedure no. TgBin-
TTB-HS-78040.

The following conditions also must be met:

The materials feed into bunker / silo must be isolated.

The Selected Person must carry out an atmosphere test before


entry and periodically during the course of work.

An Permit must be issued.

The person carrying out the work must stand on a suitable suspended
support staging placed in a position which will prevent the person

being buried by any falling material. Under no circumstances should


the person come into physical contact with the stored material in the
bunker or silo.

All persons entering bunkers / silos must wear Approved safety belts
or harness secured to the suspended support staging.

All persons working in a bunker / silo must be under constant


observation of another person outside the bunker who is able to warn
of Danger and summon or render assistance.

No naked lights or smoking permitted.

When maintenance work is to be carried out in an empty bunker / silo,


it must be ventilated and all associated infeed or outfeed equipment
Isolated.

For final cleaning of a bunker / silo, all persons entering must wear
Approved safety belts or harness with the lines properly secured and
kept taut during the whole time by one or more other persons
remaining outside the bunker. All members of the working party shall
be fully conversant with the work requirements.
