Title: Education Technology Reflection

Prior to the beginning of this course, I thought that I would only be focusing
on technology. I am thankful that I have done this course and that I now realized
how important technology is in the education sector. Despite that in our Jamaican
society it would be a challenge to use some of these computer- based and web-
based tools, as an educator in the future I can use these tools in my class. I have
also seen that I am better able to use computer based tools in a diverse manner.
One of such ways is that I have learnt how to create an interactive PowerPoint. An
interactive PowerPoint can be in the form of a game of jeopardy. While I was on
teaching practice at Calabar High School, I created PowerPoint jeopardy and my
students were very active learners. According to ISTE Standards for Teachers
(2007), teachers should facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity.
Therefore, I created a PowerPoint based on the content i.e. Spanish. The focus of
the lesson was on what students want to eat. The PowerPoint created had pictures
of Jamaican food items which students would purchase daily such as: patty, jerk
chicken and fried dumpling. The students when they saw the images of these food
items began to participate in class discussions and as a result they were able to
understand the content better.

Above all of the strengths and process that I have made, I discovered some
weak areas as well. A weak area I discovered was that students were not
collaborative when placed in groups. It was evident that the students did not have
good interpersonal relationships with each other and as a result, group work was
not effective in the psycho social classroom environment. Therefore, according to
ISTE standards for students (2007), students are expected to be creative
communicators. Students are to express themselves clearly and provide their
responses. This would signify that once the task is given, they would provide their
responses and do so using the technological tools whether web based or computer
based, available .I have learned how to create a website using Weebly as well to
create a podcast which would have recorded with the use of the sound recorder
(computer based tool).

In conclusion, I have become cognizant of all of these computer based and


web based tools. Now, I am urged as a 21st century educator to utilize these high
level technological tools in my classroom to capture my students interest and to
create a more stimulating learning atmosphere.
