JOB TITLE : SCHOOL HEALTH NURSE

QUALIFICATIONS :
1. Qualification
A. Bachelor Degree in Nursing with 3 years of experience
B. Diploma in Nursing with 3 years of experience
2. License to practice nursing profession in Kuwait
3. Physically and mentally fit
4. Have basic Arabic & English language

REPORTS TO : School Health Head nurse

RESPONSIBLE FOR : Students in school

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP : Collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare team members.

A. POSITION SUMMARY :
School Health Nurse works within the framework of philosophy, rules and policies of Ministry of
Health, Department of Nursing & School Health Department.
The School Health Nurse provides nursing services for students & school personnel.
She / he acts as advocate, liaison & consultant on health related issues for students, families, & school
personnel.
She /he protect, promote & preserve optimum physical, mental, emotional & social support for all
students &school personnel in State of Kuwait.
Knowledge of current and established professional nursing concepts, principles and practices
Skills required to provide nursing care
Leadership and management skills
Understanding of the diverse cultural customs and religious beliefs of the clients
Ability to communicate in English and/or Arabic.

B. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Selection of appropriate location and arrangement of clinic in the school

School clinic should be inside the school

School clinic should be at the ground floor and near to the administration
School clinic should be easily accessible for all students
School clinic should be spacious with hand washing area and toilet facilities
School clinic should have door with lock and key facility
Inform the school vice principal and supervisor if appropriate location is not provided
2. Prepare and equip the school health clinic with furniture, equipment and supplies.

All stationaries and furniture should be provided by school (files, papers, table , chair,
refrigerator etc)
Medical equipment and medicine supplies should be issued from MOH.
The staff should take the inventory of medical instruments, medicine & supplies on the date
of joining itself and hand over the written request forms for the needed items to the
supervisor on the same day.
The not working equipment should be send to biomedical department of concerned health
region for repairing after informing the supervisor.
3. Keeping school clinic neat and tidy all the time

Daily cleaning is recommended

All Thursday is considered as cleaning day
All furniture and supplies must be clean and dust free
All medical equipment including dressing trolley should clean with disinfectant with 70%
alcohol (example: Hisol)
If the dressing trolley is visibly soiled (blood stained, body fluid) first should be cleaned
with soap and water and dried then disinfect with 70% alcohol
4. Arrange the medicine in the cupboard.
Cupboard should have lock and key.
Display the medicine expiry form on the medicine cupboard.
All opened medicine should be labelled with date of opening.
Store the medicine according to the manufacture instruction.
Expiry date of medicine should be visible till it finished.( dont cut the strips)
The opened medicines can be used :
Ventolin 1 month
Ns 1 day

 Ointments till it finished / according to the manufacture instruction
Insulin 1 month
Syrup 15 days
Following medicines should be keep inside the refrigerator & display the expiry medicine
form in front of the door.
Syp Pandrex
Ventolin
Insulin ( with students details)
Paraffin gauze
Inform the supervisor and return the near expiry medicine before three months.
All medicine should be replace to school health centre before closing the academic year with
return documents.
5. Arrange separate trays for dressing, temperature, nebulization, emergency and etc

6. Prepare the Annual Action Plan based on health program, according to educational priorities

as well as development level of students.

7. Attend the morning school ceremony to assure personal cleanliness of the students as well as
taking the opportunity to detect students with sick signs or infectious signs

8. Practice comprehensive nursing care in accordance with professional values and moral
principles and maintains confidentiality as appropriate.

9. Provide first aid measures and emergency care according to nursing procedure in school
health.

If any unusual event/ emergency happened, call emergency. Inform supervisor and write
emergency case record and incident report.

10. Administer and document prescribed medication appropriately as per medication protocol in
school health department. Administer medication only with school health doctor sign and
stamp in the prescription.

11. Dispose medical waste properly according to protocols recommended by MOH

Sharp waste should be discarded in yellow box. Once it is filled three- fourth, inform
supervisor and return in school health centre.

 12. Keeping manual students medical file as well as using school health electronic file for each
student
The entire health file should be in the clinic & it should be arranged by grade wise.
The health file should have following copies student civil ID, birth certificate, vaccination
card and father civil ID
Check in the health file, all the scheduled vaccination completed or not
Total students and total file should be equal.
Keep special case file separately.
Update the health file regularly (height, weight, BMI, Vision, growth chart & vaccination).
13. Completing the school clinic records at all times

Daily treatment register, annual examination register, special case list, special case follow up
etc
Maintain the special case follow up records.
Providing periodic statistics and reports about activities done in the school clinic
Maintain and post a list of important emergency telephone numbers in school clinic.

14. Taking care of special cases (including students with diabetes mellitus, asthma, blood diseases,
heart diseases, kidney diseases and special needs cases) and make sure on regular follow up
and execute specialist recommendation about each special case

15. Monitor and administer vaccination for students according MOH vaccination program

Make a list of particular grade students (MMR=grade 6th Girls, DT=grade 5 and grade 12
boys & girls)
Give and return back the consent form for all students in the particular grade after signed
from the parent.
Notify the special cases, refused and failed students from the list.
Arrange the signed consent in a file and should keep it in school clinic under safe custody.
Inform the supervisor about the number of students for vaccination
Inform the date and time of vaccination to Principal according to the supervisors instruction.
Arrange the area for vaccination and assist the vaccination team.
After the vaccination enter in health file
Make vaccination record and enter
Follow up special case and absent students
16. Conduct annual & periodical physical examination for students
Conduct student annual health screening program for height, weight, BMI, vision
Record and notify health problem related to the health screening program to the concerned
school personnel and school physician

 Assist school physician in periodical medical assessment of students(KG2, Grade 2, Grade 6,
Grade 10)
Assist the school clinic doctor in examination of the graduated high school students for
higher education in abroad universities
Discover the infectious diseases cases of any student and inform the school clinic doctor for
further procedures
Performing special school health programs like lice program & scoliosis screening and others
with the supervision of school health doctor
Promote healthy school environment through regular supervision and by developing a plan
for prevention and management of hazards.
Co-operate with health inspector in inspection of school environment
Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive
immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases.
Provides health education to students, parents, teachers and other school personnel
Taking part in health promotion activities to school community
Providing medical care to students in examination committees
Maintain effective communication and relationship with students, parents ,school personnel
and other health care workers
Update current knowledge and competency for school nurse practice through in- service
education program.
Participate in evidence base/ research activities recommended by SDU and integrate it into
practice with approval of school health department.
17. Prepare notice board and it should have
Yearly action plan checklist
Duties and responsibility checklist
Special case list with parents contact number
Emergency contact number
Ambulance number
18. End of the academic year ( before school closing)
Return all medicine to school health clinic according to the supervisor instruction.
Write inventory list, include medical equipment and other items available inside the clinic,
and get seal, signature from school Mudheer (Manager) or Vakeela (Asst. manager).
Close the clinic door and handover the key to Mudheer or Vakeela
