CCSS Standards: Puzzles and Codes (bugs).

Main Lesson Aims (Concepts, Procedures, & Processes):


-The Students will review the colors (of the pictures in the power point: star, candle, heart, hand, sq
butterfly, fish, cat, flower, and ghost).
-The students will be able to use the coding system to figure out the main words from the grid.
-The students will be able to describe bugs in terms of having spots and stripes.
-The students will be able to listen and draw bugs with the spots and stripes.
-The students will be able to talk about their drawings and describe the bugs.

-I will ask other students to help them read the sentences.
-I will bring extra pencils and colors.

Lesson Schedule
Targeted teacher language: Hello Grade 4, How are you?. I have many interesting activities and I ho
pay attention with me and if you have any question you may raise your hand. Do you know what is t
of our activity today?...it's called puzzles and codes
Student language: Hi Ms. Amal, Iam fine thank you. How are you Ms. Amal, We are excited to work
activity and we will pay attention with you. Yes, teacher. Its about puzzles and codes.

Engage (warm up, review prior knowledge): time:


- After greeting I will explain the activity and model them to demonstrate how the games are 10 min
played.
-The students should know how to do the games that are in the activity and how do they start
the activity.
-I will show them the PowerPoint that includes the questions of colors and answers, they will
have multiple answers and they should choose one of the answers.
Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures): 30 mi
-I will show them a grid which has the alphabets and numbers, and I will explain how to do
this activity. Students will be able to find the hidden message using the codes. This technique
is called coding.
- The students should find out the phrase" spots and stripes "from the box.
- I will show them pictures that include a bug that has spots and a bug that has stripes and I
will show them the spots and stripes so they know how to draw it.
- I will show them a picture of a spotted bug and I will let one student to get up and talk
about the picture that has spots and identify the color of the spots.

Listening Activity:
-Pre-listening: I will keep the students in four groups and each group should have
one A3 paper that has four boxes for the drawing activity. I will explain to the
students that they are going to listen a recording that I recorded and the recording
will be about a bug. I will describe the bug and I will say that I found a red bug
with green spots, I found a bug with blue stripes, I found a bug without any
spots and stripes and I found a blue bug with black spots. The students should
have a paper and they should listen to the recording and draw what they listen to.

-While-listening:
- I will play the recording and walk around so everyone can hear and I will play the
recording two times and I should check if the students are following with the
recording and I will ask them if anyone needs help. The students should be able to
draw four different drawings about bugs and they should be able to have time to
color them.

-Post-listening:
-I will ask the students if they all have finished and if they want me to repeat the
recording and then I will give them time to finish coloring.

Speaking Activity:
-I will allow each group to talk about the drawing, for example: Group one will talk
about drawing number one and group two will talk about the second drawing and
group three will talk about the third drawing and group four will talk about the
fourth drawing.

Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment): 5 min


-I will give each student a worksheet that includes sentence, for example: I found a bug with
black spots and I will put many different sentences and pictures and they should match the
sentence that describes the picture and they should match it together. Thats all to know if
they understand the lesson.
