The Sad Story of Percy, the TV Addict by J.C Goodacre

Young Percys parents could not get

Their son to leave the TV set.
In fact, it was a common sight,
From five oclock till late at night,
To see young Percival McQueen
Before the television screen.

He watched the sport, the plays, the news,

The Westerns and the interviews.
The programmes might be good or bad,
They might be comical or sad;
He watched them all the evening though.

At half-past five the little chap

Would eat his supper on his lap;
But what he ate, he did not know
His eyes were on the childrens show!
All table manners he forgot.
It didnt worry him a jot.

And then one night, Im sad to tell

Young Percival was heard to yell:
I cannot watch it anymore,
My eyes are feeling strange and sore!
And when he got up from his chair, his eyes were green and red and
square!

Poor Percy had to pay the price

Of ignoring good advice.
For fear that you might share his fate,
You must learn to discriminate.
Dont be like Percival McQueen

The Road not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Ordinance on Arrival by Naomi Lazard

Welcome to you
who have managed to get here.
Its been a terrible trip;
you should be happy to have survived it.
Statistics prove that not many do.
You would like a bath, a hot meal,
a good nights sleep. Some of you
need medical attention.
None of this is available.
These things have always een
in short supply; now
they are impossible to obtain.

This is not
a temporaty solution;
it is permanent.
Our condolences on our disappointment.
It isn ot our responsibility
everything you have heard about this place
is false. It is not our fault
you have been deceived,
ruined your health getting here.
For reasons beyond our control
there is no vehicle out.

1.13 Why are the people disappointed?

SECTION B KATY OF SKY ROAD
Read the following extract and answer the questions that follow:

I convince Ricardo and Rasta that I will be all right when they drop me on the corner. Ricardo insists that I take his
jacket for the rain. We will wait here for ten minutes, Ricardo says, just in case you need us.
You dont need to wait, I say.
All is quiet in our street. Our house is in darkness. I lift the gate carefully before I open it so that it does not squeak.
Im happy to find the ladder but get the fright of my life when I see that my bedroom light is on. I perch the ladder
against the wall and climb up, the rain lashing at me.
To my horror I find that the windows are closed and that the burglar bars have been replaced. And worse, I hear
Hectors voice ranting and raving and Auntie Rose trying to calm him down. What am I going to do?
I climb down and go to try the back door but it is locked. Should I wake Mario? But he wills end me right back home.
So I go around to the front of the house. The front door is locked too. Rasta and Ricardo drive past. I wave them on
and then, as they go, the front door swings open.
Hector is fuming. So, Katy, when did you become a big woman who can make her own decisions? Sneaking off with
a rubbish of a boy to do tik, hey? Dont think I dont know what you have been up to. Pretending to be sick, wasting
the Med-Lemon that I work so hard to provide you with!
I run up to my room. It is a mess. My posters are torn and strewn across the floor. All my clothes are lying in a heap,
my bed is turned upside down. Auntie Rose is folding things up.
Who did this? I cry.
Hector is right behind me. You have some explaining to do! he shouts, flaring his nostrils.
You were not raised like this, Katy. Im very disappointed, Auntie Rose says. Whose jacket are you wearing?
