UGBA 105 Case Analysis

Coach Clark
1. Coach Clark develops his team through three distinct stages, setting initial expectations, giving
consistent feedback, and managing team dynamics, all while following the path-goal model of
leadership in each stage. Throughout the initial recruitment visits by prospective rugby players to
the time they are senior-level players for the program, Clark provides his players with the
necessary information, support, and resources critical to the team achieving its ultimate goals. In
the beginning stage of setting initial expectations, Clark takes on an almost participative type of
path-goal leader role in regards to determining whether a prospective player is a good fit for the
Cal program. Clark goes through the key values of his team, emphasizing its merit-based system
and team-first attitude, and lays out the expectations that players are expected to be grateful,
tough, and resilient. Clark then proceeds to interview prospects after they express interest in
being recruited by Cal and engages them to participate in conversation, all while observing the
prospects appearance, speech, and mannerisms.
