Introduction
BEFORE WE DIVE IN, LET me ask you a few questions.
Would you like to have a business where the only thing you do all day long is
what you absolutely love and are great at?
Would you like to create a business that comes from your heart, where you
dont have to compromise any aspect of who you are?
Would you like to start a new business confident in the knowledge that
youre making all the right decisions with how you spend all of your time
and money?
Would you like to have a business where you create more income and more
true wealth than youve ever had before?
If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, I have good news for you
youre reading the right book!
In the pages that follow, were going to explore how you can create your dream business
right now by matching it to your passions and building a solid foundation for success.
Youre also going to learn the three massive mistakes that people make when starting a
new business. These mistakes can sink your startup before it ever has a chance to thrive
but not if you march in with your eyes open, ready to spot those pitfalls and avoid them.
IN JUST A FEW HOURS, youre going to uncover whats taken me 25 years to fine-tune.
Thats 25 years of building small businesses, consulting with Fortune 1000 companies,
working with universal laws and principles, and researching and implementing the very
best systems and practices that exist in business, finance and peak human performance.
Have you heard the idea that 80% of success is simply showing up?
By downloading and opening this ebook, youve shown
up. The fact that youre reading this right now speaks
volumes about your desire to create the best possible
business and life for you and your loved ones.
Lets get started!
More and more, people want connection and to buy from regular people just like
themselves.
Most big companies are focused on cutting costs and are providing employment to
fewer and fewer people. The wealth is being shared by a very small number.
Consumers are waking up to thisthey dont want to buy as much as they used to
from traditional institutions, global organizations or recognized brands. Buy local is
their rallying cry. They want to know the people who craft the products or deliver the
services they purchase.
As marketing guru Seth Godin says, Small is the new big. People crave and are drawn
to the authentic and the heartfelt. Theres a need for people like you who want to live
their hearts desire and find fulfillment in making a difference in peoples lives.
Everything is online. We look to the Internet for information, and we find it in blog
posts, articles, infographics, videos, podcasts and training programs.
We also buy online. In 2010, $165 billion in goods and services were purchased via
e-commerce. In the next few years, that sales figure will reach the trillions.
The world is increasingly wired. By 2017, 68% of the worlds population will have
Internet access. Thats a staggering number.
You can package who you are and what you know, and sell it to an eager online mar-
ket. Thousands of people are doing just that and enjoying phenomenal success.
Just thinkyou get to have the best customers, achieve the highest margins, make
the most difference to the most people, and all with technology thats easily accessi-
ble and inexpensive to use.
The truth is the world is in need of people like you, people who are willing to step up
and own who they are. While others are out looking for jobs, trying to fit who they
are and what they know into an organization, youll be building your dream business.
Reality Check:
It Aint Always Sunshine and Roses
A whopping 80% of new businesses fail in their first year.
Of those that are left, 50% fail in the next two to five years.
End result: After five years, only one out of every 10 businesses that start is still
around.
Ouch!
Whats so terrible about the statistics is that there are just three mistakes that cause
most of those business failuresthree basic missteps that can kill your business dreams,
taking your confidence and your money with them.
Read on to learn about those three mistakes and how to outsmart them. Take the
time to do the exercises and the thinking that are asked of you.
Your business deserves a fighting chance, doesnt it? Lets give it that chance
together.
Some pursue a business based on what theyve done for most of their life.
Others choose a business because research shows its a solid business model and
they believe it will make them a lot of money.
Still others choose a business based on the latest trend and marketplace need.
Dont get me wrongall of those are valid and important factors when choosing a busi-
ness direction. What tends to get left out of the consideration, though, is self-reflection.
Too many solopreneurs dont take the time they need for soul searching, to get
clarity on what would really jazz them and what, at the core, embodies their full
self-expression and potential. They dont reflect on what the absolute best business
for them would be.
So what, Kim? Isnt that all kind of woo-woo? I mean, come on, its the practical busi-
ness factors that decide whether a company will succeed or not, you might be think-
ing.
Well, Im here to tell you what 25 years of sales, coaching, training and consulting in
the business trenches have taught me: This woo-woo stuff is critical.
Its my core belief that one of the most important tasks of our lives is to find our
unique purpose, to discover the God-given talents and gifts we possess and to use
those gifts joyfully.
I also believe that building your business around your unique purpose is like creating
a basement for your house. Its the foundation that holds the entire structure steady,
even as the winds blow.
Are you clear about your unique purpose? Are you clear on how you can express your
fullest potential?
Ive distilled all of that work into four essential elements that come together to cre-
ate your unique Superstar Formula.
When you align with your Superstar Formula, you create an unstoppable fire in your
business that ignites you and the people you serve.
Passion + STRENGTHS + Unique Value + Personality & Style = Your Superstar Formula
1. Your Passion
For your business to thrive, you must base your business around your passions.
It doesnt matter what that passion isyou might love personal development, fitness,
being an author or painter, sharing your knowl-
edge, making cool stuff with your hands, business,
law, the healing arts, coaching or throwing par-
tiesit only matters that you identify it.
Your passions energize and excite you. They make your Law of Attraction

Make a list of all the things youd like to have in your life until the day you die. This
is a chance to build your bucket list. Have fun with it.

vision, have a soul mate relationship, climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, meet a famous
person, own a vacation property, give $50,000 to my favorite charity

How did it feel to explore all those things you want to be, do and have in your life?
Was it easy or was it difficult? Youll probably think of other things to add to your list
in the coming days. Be sure to write those down, too.
Lets say you picked creating a leadership center. The reasons you want this could be:

Now, for each of the goals you chose, write five reasons why you believe you can
have it.
Example
I am persistent
I have a great network
I deserve it after all my hard work
I am good at bringing people together
Im good at sourcing and acquiring real estate

2. Your Strengths
For you and your business to truly excel, you need to build everything you do around
what youre greatest at.
In his book Now, Discover Your Strengths, Marcus Buckingham defines strengths
as consistent, near perfect performance. Its what comes to you naturally and effort-
lessly and is part of your brains operating system.
Your brain is wired to be good at certain things. You cant teach someone to excel in
Our strengths, talents and genius form the very core of who we are. They make
us the unique person we see in the mirror each morning.
One of my core strengths is empathy. Its awesome that I became aware of this
because it confirmed my path as a teacher. Having empathy allows me to connect
and engage with people on a deep level.
On the other hand, Im not great with technical details so I outsource the design and
management of my website and other technical tasks to partners who do the work and
keep me informed. As one of my mentors says, If it aint your genius, it aint your job!
Your core strengths are things that come so easily and naturally that you often over-
look them because they take so little thought or effort to use. Some people (me
included!), who were brought up to believe that making money requires hard work
and struggle, can feel guilty getting paid for something that feels effortless. But we
have to break through that guilt.
By using as many of your innate strengths as possible, you intensify the life force
running through you and your business. You get better results, attract more money,
contribute more value and experience greater fulfillment.
You can waste vast amounts of energy trying to become something youre not.
Its so much better and more efficient to apply the natural talents you already have.
This may seem obvious but it amazes me how many people go through life not har-
nessing and living their full potential.
Working on improving your weaknesses may prevent failure, but youll never truly
excel unless you focus and build on your strengths.
Your strengths hold the potential for delivering your greatest levels of performance
and success. They also hold the greatest potential for you to achieve mastery.
Marcus Buckingham says a strength equals talent combined with knowledge and
skill. You may have 25 natural talents but the ones you cultivate and practice are the
ones you can truly call your strengths.
Think about and list 5 things you remember you were most good at or liked to
do as a child.
What were you recognized for or what stands out in your mind? Perhaps you were a
leader or had notable character traits, won awards, created some cool school proj-
ects, or maybe you had a lemonade stand every summer.
Think about and list 5 of your best accomplishments or things you are most
proud of as an adult.
Focus on things youve achieved since you began working. Think about your career, volun-
teer and social life. What core things do you feel deeply about and that stand out for you?
Now go back to each of those accomplishments or things you were good at, and
beside each point, write the quality, characteristic or trait that it took to achieve
that accomplishment.
Examples:
As you just learned in the previous section, strengths are things youre born with.
Your brain and body are hard-wired for them. By contrast, your unique value reflects the
knowledge, lessons and perspectives youve acquired through your life experience. Your
unique value is inevitably linked to your strengths but tends to be acquired over your
lifetime.
Bob Burg, author of a powerful little book called The Go Giver, says, Money is an
echo of value; its the thunder to values lightning.
Burgs maxim supports one of my core beliefs, which is that the money you receive
is directly proportionate to the value you provide. The more value you provide to a
larger number of people, the more income you earn.
Some of my students ask, Does this mean that if someone doesnt have much
money, theyre not valuable or they dont offer value?
Its a great question. A lack of income doesnt mean a lack of value as a person. Every
human being has great intrinsic value. But a lack of abundant income does mean the
person hasnt found an effective way to realize or communicate their value to the
marketplace. Or, they have limiting beliefs concerning money.
Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in
payment, Burg says. By giving more in value than you take in payment, both par-
ties come away better off than they were before the transaction. These exchanges
increase prosperity both for individuals and for all of society.
In fact, giving more than you take in payment raises the standard of living for every-
one. Think about itthe implications are enormous!
What lessons and insights do you naturally share when working or interacting
with others?
What things have you been through that might inspire people or instruct them on
how to live a good life or grow a business?
List life and work experiences that you feel create a unique story or have resulted in
a unique perspective that you would (or do) share with others.
What has frustrated or challenged you the most in your life that you have found
solutions to?
List all the epiphanies, hard life lessons, defining moments and turning points in
your life.
From the list you just created above, circle or highlight the top 10 to 15 things
you are most committed to in terms of serving other people. Take your time to
really consider this.
What I mean by essence is those qualities, personality traits, quirks and idiosyncra-
sies that make you the person you are. Are you goofy, classy, edgy, nerdy, a hope-
less romantic, an intellectual?
Be completely natural and completely yourself. In fact, be your biggest and best
self. Build your brand around this uniqueness.
Marie Forleo, one of my mentors, says people will pay for clarity, substance and style.
Shes absolutely right.
Youll be amazed at what happens when you step into your style and own it. Youll
begin to attract people who choose you over someone else because they connect
with youthey relate to your style, your story and your uniqueness.
2] List all of the roles you would love to fill or have fantasized about.
You might include things like goddess, rock star, debutante, dancer, philanthropist,
millionaire. Stretch your imagination and take the time to make an expansive list.
4] How does List 3 (quirks, traits and characteristics) support the roles in
Lists 1 and 2?
Write down any insights you observe. Now, using a colorful pen or highlighter, circle
the top 10 traits and characteristics that stand out for you.
5] Looking now at Lists 1 and 2, circle 4 to 6 roles that represent the core of who
you are and who you want to be in your life.
You want to choose roles that make you feel strong and centered. The point of this
exercise is to find the roles that align with how you want to show up in your business.
Some aspiring entrepreneurs never even get past dreaming about starting a business
because of their fears. Am I smart enough? Do I have enough experience? Will this
product really deliver? Will I be able to make enough money?
When one of my clients, Diane, first saw the module on fear, negativity and resis-
tance in my 12-week program, she said, Really?? Do we really have to deal with that?
Fear, negativity and resistance stop most people from going after their dreams,
whether thats starting a successful business or anything else they want to accom-
plish in their life.
You cant develop the business of your dreams without managing the fear that
will come up for you. Whatever has stopped you from moving forward in your life
in the past is going to come up again as you take the steps to launch your new
endeavor. Guaranteed.
The same is true of negativity and resistance. If you have negative or limiting beliefs
about your value or about money, that will come up for you to look at and transcend.
But Ill tell you a secret. No one, no matter how confident they may seem, is ever
100% ready to start a business. Fear happens to everyone.
The trick is to know its coming and to have ways to deal with it. No, you cant fore-
see every twist, turn and challenge that will crop up, but if you choose your business
wisely and enlist help, confidence will replace fear. You may just surprise yourself.
We all have our comfort zones and a natural inclination to avoid pain. If you stay
in your comfort zone to avoid pain or fear, the pain or fear grows stronger. You
become trapped in a small world that shrinks ever smaller over time.
But when we move closer to pain and lean into it, it tends to shrink and disappear.
Adversity is the weight against which you develop your strength. Athletes know this
principle very well.
One of my clients is a cyclist who biked her way across Canada in a summer. She told
me that when she was training for her ride, she forced herself to turn her dislike of
strong headwinds into gratitude. She knew that the stronger the wind, the stronger she
grew in battling it. When she got really tired and discouraged, shed even yell, Thank
you, wind! This small act of defiance gave her a little boost of energy every time.
No Negative Nellies
Its not only your negativity you need to worry
about. When starting your new business, beware
of the negativity of those around you.
Seek out like-minded people who have either achieved success or who are on a sim-
ilar path to success as you. Even though being a solopreneur means youre a busi-
ness of one person, you dont do it alone. You cant.
Its absolutely vital to surround yourself with an encouraging and supportive group
who can help you reach your goals and with whom you can relate.
You may need to do a bit of digging to find the groups that are right for you. Spend
some time searching online if thats what you need to do. (Fortunately, when youre
ready, the right people tend to just show up.)
I plan to check out these groups for moral support in my business journey:
* When you join the Freedom Street program, you gain access to a global community of solopreneurs
just like you. We support each other, share our challenges and triumphs, brainstorm, problem solve
and help promote each others businesses.
Its like going on a road trip. How will you know youve arrived if you dont know
your destination? And how do you get to your destination if youve never been there
before and dont have a map?
Like the other mistakes Ive shared with you, creating a strategy before launching
seems like common sensebut it isnt always common practice. Creating a vision
and strategic plan is what entrepreneurial guru Michael Gerber calls taking the time
to work on your business rather than just in your business.
A vision and strategy are essential and can make the difference between struggling
and thriving in your new business. Renewing your vision and strategy periodically
keeps you thriving.
Holding a vision is one of the most important functions you can perform as a
solopreneur.
Your vision makes you a beacon that engages your customers and partners.
Perhaps most important of all, your vision activates the Law of Attraction so that the
actions you need to take and the resources you need show up for you.
The type of visioning Im talking about combines both right- and left-brain thinking.
The act of visualizing is a right-brained, or creative, activity. The left-brain or analyt-
ical activity takes your vision and turns it into a strategic plan. Both are essential for
ensuring your success.
Below, Im going to walk you through part of the Freedom Street creative visioning pro-
cess. Were going to create a vision of your ideal business and life three years from now.
For this exercise, dont worry if youre not clear on what your business is. Just pick one
business idea that youre considering. This exercise will allow you to try it on for size.
Have fun! Put your analytical brain in sleep mode. Simply write down whatever comes
to your mind and go with it.
have an abundant and consistent flow of money coming to you from all the income
sources youve created, including products and services that provide exceptional
quality and value to a large number of people who are your loyal customers. You
have complete personal and financial freedom.
Reflect on the following questions. After each question, write down whatever comes to
your mind. Dont think about the answers; just write down whatever comes up for you.
Today you have full permission to be, do and have anything you want. If you feel
certain elements of your vision arent possible, or you have no idea how to achieve
them, thats OK. For now, just pretend.
1. You have established a solid presence in your industry and youre recognized for
having developed unique and quality products and/or services that provide great
value to your niche customers. Describe your products and services.
2. You have a notable brand in your industry and with the public. Describe your
companys brand.
3. The media has taken note of you and has written some insightful articles about you
and your business. What are a headline and a highlight from one of these articles?
4. What publication has this article been published in? What is one TV or web-based
program that youve been interviewed on?
5. How many customers do you have? Name two of them. (Remember, this is your
fantasynot what you have today but what youd like to have.)
7. You have an amazing office environment that you love and that serves you well.
Describe your work environment.
8. How do you and your business contribute to your local community? Your global
community?
10. Do you have a second property or additional properties (such as retreats, cot-
tages, investment properties)? What other investments do you have?
11. Where and how often are you taking vacations and retreats?
Now that youve written down an abundance of images and information, use these
thoughts to write a one- or two-page story that embodies the key elements of your
vision. Have fun with it! Paint a picture of your ideal business and life three years
from now.
Once youve done that, take the story and condense it into a statement of one to
three sentences. Make sure it resonates and totally inspires you.
Congratulations! This is the first draft of your vision statement, which will guide you
for the next three years and underpin your strategic plan. Are you already beginning
to feel some of its power to inspire and energize you?
The next step is to create a detailed three-year road map. The work of creating a
strategic road map is nearly a book in itself so its beyond the reach of this guide.
But know that youve done the incredibly important foundational work of helping
your vision take shape.
1. Choose the right business for you by aligning to your Superstar Formula.
2. Manage and embrace fear, negativity and resistance.
3. Develop a compelling vision to form the foundation of a strategic plan.

Since I was a teenager, Ive felt deep down that I had an important calling but I didnt
know what it was. I searched for years.
In my early days, I went from career to career and job to job. I always followed my
heart and inner guidance, mind youand always wondered if I was a little crazy!
My first real epiphany came after high school. I took two years off before going to
university and worked as a high school secretary. I used to chat frequently with this
really eccentric history teacher named Mr. Miller.
I remember asking Mr. Miller a question about history that had always perplexed me.
He answered my question with such passion and such simplicity, and in a way that
addressed my question so fully, that I immediately knew I wanted to facilitate a-ha
moments like the one hed just created for me. I knew right then I was meant to be a
teacherthat has never changed.
I became a high school history and political science teacher. I loved it, but part of me
felt I couldnt fully spread my wings in that system.
I decided to take some time away from teaching and ended up in sales, where I
stayed for the next eight years. I loved the freedom. (And the money!) But something
was still missing. I felt like I was dying a slow death. Deep down I knew I wanted to
have a bigger impact.
For the next few years, I took the entrepreneurial route and started up several busi-
nesses and business divisions, some for venture capitalists and some with partners
flying by the seat of our pants. I had the privilege to work with some of Canadas top
business leaders and had some very powerful mentors.
Something was still missing. I wasnt fully using all of my strengths and passions
and I yearned to do so. When I finally connected to my strengths as a visionary and
trailblazer, I realized I could never be truly fulfilled working for someone else.
So 12 years ago, I took the leap and started my first solopreneur business, a com-
pany called Vision Street. Vision Street was a training, networking and coaching
organization that supported a community of over 800 entrepreneurs to create and
achieve their business visions.
The business thrived for three years. To take my business to the next level, I decided
to take on a business partner. Three weeks before we were scheduled to launch the
joint business, my partner jumped ship. Id sunk all the money I had into that ven-
ture (including selling my first investment property) and was in significant debt. I had
no choice but to shut the business down.
In one month, I lost my business partner, my dream business and my live-in boy-
friend. I was on the verge of bankruptcy, bitter and disillusioned. It taught me some
hard lessons.
To get back on my feet, I went back to a job. For seven years I had the great fortune
to help grow one of North Americas top 10 sales training firms. We were recognized
as a Profit 100 fastest-growing company for six years in a row. I learned world-class
best practices in sales, consulting and adult learning principles. I learned how to be
a top performer and gained deeper insight into how to successfully grow a small
business.
In 2012, the universe conspired to bring the events I needed to leave that organi-
zation so I could revitalize my business from 12 years ago and bring you the super-
charged methodology Im sharing with you here.
The work I do now is a culmination of a lifetime of learning. Its my pot of gold at the
end of the rainbow, and I hope it will be yours too.
