1. Teacher (T) will gain students (ss) attention. Good morning,
second graders! On my way here, I ran into my friend Dinah,
and he was playing one of my favorite instruments! Please
listen to my song and tell me what he is playing.
2. 2. T gives pitch from piano or pitch pipe. T models patting
steady beat on lap. T sings song:
No one in the house but Dinah, Dinah,
No one in the house but me I know.
No one in the house but Dinah, Dinah,
Strummin on the old banjo!
3. T follows up on directed listening: Who can raise a quiet
hand to tell me what instrument Dinah is playing?
4. T calls on quiet raised hand.
5. S: The banjo!

to self as she sings: No one in the house by Dinah, Dinah
7. T gestures to ss. SS: No one in the house by Dinah, Dinah
*listen carefully are the children singing in my
register or theirs? If they are in their own register,
continue. If not, repeat modeling, add a child-friendly
statement regarding the differences in your registers
and the differences between your model and what you
would like to hear. If they still sing in your register
after this, repeat the step again modeling in falsetto or
give pitches using the piano.*
