1
Calculate the quantity of earthwork for 200m length for a portion of a road in an
uniform ground, the heights of banks at the two ends being 1.00m and 1.60m. The
formation width is 10m and side slopes 2:1 (H: V). Assume that there is no
transverse slope.
Given Data:
Q=?
L=200m
d1=1m
d2=1.6m
B=10m
H:V=2:1
Solution:

Area of Mid-Section:
Area=B*dm + s*(dm) ^2
dm= (1+1.6)/2=1.3m
A=10X1.3+2X (1.3)^2=16.38 m3
Q=AXL=16.38X200=3276 m3
Mean Sectional Area:
A1= (10+14)/2X1=12m2
A2= (16.4+10)/2X1.6=21.12m2
Am= (A1+A2)/2=16.56m2
Q=AmXL=16.56X200=3312m3
Prismoidal Formula Method:
Q= {B (d1+d2)/2+s(d12+d22+d1d2)/3}XL
Q= {10(1+1.6)/2+2(12+1.62+1X1.6/3} X200=3288m 3

Design Problem-2:
Reduced level (R.L.) of ground along the center line of a proposed road at 30m
interval is given below. The formation level (F.L.) at R.D. of 300m is 107.0m and the
road is in downward gradient of 1 in 150 up to R.D. of 420m and then the gradient
changes to 1 in 100 downward. Formation width of the road is 10m and side slopes
of banking are 2:1 (H:V).
i) Draw longitudinal section of the road and a typical cross section. Also, determine
the quantity of earthwork involved.
ii) For estimation of turning on side slopes, find out the area of side slopes as well.
