Statement on Organizational Ethics

Ethics, to me means a sense of understanding ones responsibilities. It is doing well even when

nobody is watching. Making the decision of good or bad behavior in the work place, or showing

how much you care about your job duties. Ethics is the moral principle that makes the decisions

of ones behavior. Ethics is the behavior that we use in work or out of work, its a reflection of

our moral principles. Some elements of ethics we can use at work are professionalism,

respectfulness, dependability, dedication, determination, accountability and humility. Great work

ethics energizes us and our employees to face challenges head on, by being the best and keeping

us at the top of our game. Other factors that demonstrate a strong work ethics can be integrity,

sense of responsibility, emphasis on quality, discipline, and sense of teamwork. All these are

great factors of work ethics, however I feel that integrity is the most important one of all five.

The main reason I state this is because ethics itself talks about the moral principles of our

behavior. Integrity is all about the cause and effects of our behavior, integrity fosters trusting

relationships with clients, coworkers and supervisors. Our coworkers value our ability to give

honest feedback and clients trust the advice we give them. Our supervisors rely on our high

moral standards, trusting us not to steal from the company or create problems. For example, lets

say Im an employee at a staffing agency and its my responsibility to drug test new hires. One of

the new hires is friends with my supervisor, and his drug test comes back positive for illegal

substance. It is my responsibility to let the supervisor know of this, however once I bring it to his

attention he sees the name on the test and asked me to write it off as clear for employment. If I

agree with him not only am I losing my integrity but I have lowered my work ethics and lost part

of my moral principles. To keep all my integrity I would politely response by saying, sorry and

no Im not going to write it off as good for employment. If I lose my job over my actions I at

least know I did the right thing and that person is not going to put someones life in danger in the

work place. And ethics now becomes work or organizational ethics, which are the principals and

standards that a business operates by. In other words, it shows how much the business or

organization expresses the values it has to its employees and how they handle their own laws,

policies, and regulations. These principals and standards are demonstrations of actions and

fairness, compassion, integrity, honor and responsibility. Like I mention on top its about doing

the right thing, its about being fair with everyone. A reflection of our behavior and the sense of

our responsibility.

Justice as Fairness

The theory that I personally feel I abide by is the ethical theory of justice as fairness. The ethical

theory of justice as fairness stands for the belief that each person has to be giving what he or she

deserves or give each person his or her due. Justice and fairness are somewhat related, they are

both terms that are used interchangeably. Justice is used with reference to a standard of rightness.

While fairness is used with regard to an ability to judge without reference to ones feelings or

interest. This is why I believe that I abide by the ethical theory of justice as fairness. If a person

is well educated and had good work experience he or she deserve a shot at a good opportunity of

employment. If that same person once working and has great work ethics and high values, that

same person deserves a pay raise or promotions. In todays world all people expect of you is hard

work and excellent performance, which theres nothing wrong with that. However they give the

promotion or pay raise to the person that hardly performs or has a relationship to management. I

got my first associate in business administration, but after seeing so much bad judgment and

experiencing unfairness. I cancelled my journey to my bachelors in administration and started

again from the bottom, but this time it was for human resource and organization behavior. I told
Week 3 5

myself once I had a leash on management I will make all the right choices and give the

employees the opportunities they deserve based on their hard work and performance and not by

the connection they may have.

Developing a Style of Ethics

I develop my style of ethics by doing the right thing, even when no one is looking. My particular

style of ethics consist of a few factors or characteristics. The most important of this

characteristics are integrity, responsibility, dedication, determination and professionalism. I feel

that by doing the right thing even when someone asks you not to, you show integrity and at that

time you know you have more value than that person. By me showing that I care about the

quality and being committed to my job it shows my sense of responsibility. I am a hard worker, I

take no short cuts, and Im diligent. Dedication and determination are what I stand for and what

Im committed too. What I mean is that I set goals for myself and no matter all the chaos life

throws at me I never take my vision off my dreams. I know there is always a solution to any

issue I may face and I know I can get pass it to achieve my goals. Thanks to all I learned in this

course and all my previous courses I can apply them in my life. Thanks to all of my study and

knowledge I have gain it will be reflected on my professionalism.

Different Ethics

If a person shares my same ethics he or she knows what I or we stand for. But a person that does

not share my ethical style, I really hope I get a chance to influence that person. The way I would

like to influence that person is by leading by example. Ill bring to the table all my moral
Week 3 6

principles and values, and work ethics. By showing and putting to play my personal beliefs that

over a period of year have gain, it would allow me to change that persons opinions and attitude.

By targeting their attitude I can change or modify their corrupted information and now their

personal attitude becomes personal values. Once their values have changed they can carry

personnel principles it becomes their strong convictions and contribute to the development of

their moral orientation. The definition of what we consider to be right. I feel if Im able to

influence this person he or she might want to do the same one day for some else. If we have

more people that do whats right there be a lot less unfairness in organizations.

Ethics behavior as a Leader

My values and morals would have a huge impact in my behavior as a leader. As we know values

are an individuals judgment or standard of behavior and morals are another individual

characteristic that can affect an individuals ethic. They are more like rules people develop as a

result of cultural norms and values and are, traditionally, what employees learn from their

childhood, culture, education, religion. My ethics would influence my behavior as a leader in the

way of leading by example. I do believe in no good deed goes unseen. What I mean is every

causes has an effect. So if a good cause is perform a good effect well happen. For example, if my

ethical behavior is to do the right in my work place, in time other will pick up on it and they

would start using the same work ethics. So lets say I work at a restaurant taking orders up front

in the register. The restaurant does not ask us to take the order to customers table. But I decide

to do so anyway because it a good deed and its going beyond what the restaurant asks of us.

Eventually other employees see this action and they start doing it too. That would be the effect or

influence of my work ethics on them.

Week 3 7

Developing Ethics within an Organization

The way I would help develop the ethics of an organization would be my making or developing a

code of conduct. In my code of conduct it would explain why its important and why we must

use good ethics. For example, some of the ethics would be arriving on time to work even when

the boss is not there. By arriving on time it shows other that you care about your job. Write down

a daily tasks for every day of the week and try to accomplish all task in a professional and timely

manner. By doing so it allows you to keep track of your progress as you scratch one off the list, it

also helps motivate you to keep going. Why it is important to improve ourselves every day. This

reflects as great performance and give you room for promotions and pay raises. Evaluate our

work, if we can identify our weaknesses and create a plan to improve on those weak areas we

can learn and understand new responsibilities. In addition, it will make it easier to understand

new future task they might hand you. This is why it is

Important to always be in a positive attitude. Positive people tend to be more motivated and

have a higher morale. It can help you promote willingness to perform at a higher level

consistently.

Summarize

In a hand full I can say that ethics for a person rather it be on work or off work can provide a

great way to improve our morals and values. I cannot stress enough the importance of ethics. It

doing well even when nobody is watching. Making the decision of good or bad behavior in the

work place, or showing how much you care about your job duties. Ethics is the moral principle

that makes the decisions of ones behavior. Ethics is the behavior that we use in work or off work

its a reflection of our moral principles. Overall ethics should be a concern to our moral

judgement about right and wrong. The decisions we face in an organization depend on our

morals, values, and work ethics, and depending how we make those decision we can influenced

ourselves by the companys culture.
