Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing
Opportunity in your classroom:

I would use this site as an extra credit assignment. Students will use the site to collaborate with
scientists through an experiment of the students choosing. The guidelines for the assignment are that
students must choose an experiment that includes a standard and an objective from the school year. As
the year goes on, the teacher will have a list of all the standards and objectives in the class so that
students can pick which one that want to work with. Through this assignment, the student will show the
research that he or she will do to complete multiple experiments to clarify the students original
hypothesis for the experiment. The completed experiment along with the research, and materials used
for the assignment will serve as the students final grade for the extra credit.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom?
The student would need to use either a computer or Ipad to use the Journey North website or
Journey North application.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of
them may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high
LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often
beyond their school: Students will collaborate with other students and mentors
online to complete their experimental research.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or
producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Students will
collect data for their research as they go through the trials and errors of the
experiments. Students will be fully engaged with the results of their projects as the
document the data results for their experiments.
c. Higher-order thinking: Students will be evaluating their own completed work as
they finalize the results of their research projects.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their

1
product: Students will publish a hard copy of their work to the teacher of the class
as well as the mentor scientist online that students collaborate with online.
Journey North will save any documents that the student needs to use as a future
resource for student collaboration.

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating
What Level of Technology Implementation best describes this learning activity and Why? I
believe that this activity is at a LoTi level four or higher because it requires student to not only
research about the experiment they want to do, but also have to actually apply this knowledge
with collaboration with the online scientist. Students will be using the online source as a tool to
assist in their experimentation. Students must understand how to use Journey North as well as
completing the experiment in person by using background knowledge of the standard.
How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your
districts Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies?
The teacher will need to keep record of the students participating in the research assignment.
Students who do participate in the assignment, will need to remain completely anonymous with
the mentor scientist. The teacher will also work in correspondence with the website to ensure
student safety is maintained. The teacher will also get administrative reassurance that the
assignment is applicable to the science objectives of the class, and could benefit student learning
and follows safety rules and precautions of the school.
