Standard: RL.1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and


demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

Culture of Cultural Concept: Working and getting along with others

Objective: Students will be able to retell stories, using key details, and
understand of their central message or lesson.

Materials: The book Fishing Day by Andrea Davis Pinkney,


whiteboard, markers, paper.

Procedure

Set the stage/ Anticipatory Set


Show the book Fishing Day by Andrea Davis Pinkney and
say, Today we are going to talk about helping others.
Have any of you helped a friend when no one else would?
How did it make you feel? How did it make your friend
feel? (auditory)

State the Objective


Say, We are going to retell the story using detail from the
story and be able understand the message from the story.
(auditory)

Investigate Prior Knowledge


Review with students about how using details from the
story retells the story.
Review with students about messages or lessons learned
from previous stories they have read. (Auditory/Visual)

New Information/Input & Model


Ask students to write in their journal about a time they
helped a friend. (Visual)
Show students the book Fishing Day and have them
discuss what they the book will be about. (Auditory)
Read the story to the class(Auditory)

Guided Practice
Ask students what they think the message of the story is
and write it on the board. (Visual & Auditory)
Ask students for key details that helped them understand
the message and write them on the board for the students
to see.( visual & Auditory)
Put students in groups and ask them to write down
differences between Reenie and Peter using details from
the story (Tactile)

Accommodations
English learners: In small groups have them write
differences between Peter and Reenie using pictures.
Special Education: In groups work with them by asking
them what makes Peter and Reenie different.
Gifted: Students will write differences between Reenie and
Peter using details from the story and write and discuss
what the message of the story is.

Topic Review/ Closure


Teacher asks, How can we learn the message of a story by
using details? Students reply with answers.

Evaluation/Assessment- Teacher will check and read over what the


children wrote while in the groups.
