We are happy to share announcements for new family births, birthdays, anniversaries, retirements and other special
occasions. Please notify Brother James Ryan so that we can share with the Council.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful and Blessed Easter, but now that Easter is over we may ask
ourselves what is there to do now? In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus instructed his followers to make
disciples of all Nations. As Catholics, we are called to evangelize and invite people into our Faith. Or at
the very least invite those that we know who are Catholics and no longer attend Mass to come back to the
Church. As Knights of Columbus, we are also called to invite those men that we know who are Catholic
to join us as Brother Knights. What better time to do this then now. Now while we are full of the Spirit of
our Risen Lord. Following the Resurrection, the disciples of Jesus took steps to grow the movement by
their willingness to answer the skepticism of their critics, break bread with strangers and take care of the
sick. We as Knights also need to do the same thing. We can answer the skepticism of our critics by
fulfilling our Oaths to keep Charity, Unity and Fraternity at the forefront of our acts. We can invite those
in our Parishes to break bread with us by holding functions at the Church like pancake or bagel
breakfasts or hosting Church BBQs or Picnics, and we can take care of the sick in our communities by offering aid or
volunteering at our local nursing homes or Hospitals, holding Blood Drives or any numbers of ways. We need to lead by
Christs example. We need to show the people in our Parishes who WE are, and by our example we will convince them to want
to join us.
By the time that you all read this we will have elected new State Officers for the New York State Council. The elections are
conducted at our State Convention being held at the Villa Roma Resort April 27th- 29th. I will be attending the Convention and
will give you a detailed report in my next message. On May 22nd there will be an Admission (1st) Degree held at Patchogue
Council at 8 pm. All Brother Knights are encouraged to attend. I will see you all in May,

Vivat Jesus,
M. Boehm D.D.

Father Henry Reid, newly appointed Pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel

The Knights of Columbus has a long history of promoting a culture of

vocations in families and parishes. The Order sponsors a variety of
programs that provide financial assistance to seminarians and donates
more than $1 million in vocation endowment funds each year. Knights
readily offer prayers and moral support for men in formation as well.
Hundreds of men studying for the priesthood have received support from
the Knights of Columbus in recent years. This past Palm Sunday some of us
at the Council were fortunate enough to spend some time with a few of
these young men.
Father Henry Reid serves as associate pastor of Holy Family Church on Long
Island. He has recently been appointed to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in
Patchogue, and will take over the job as Pastor there starting in July
2017. He readily admits that he avoided the priesthood for years and has
held numerous jobs, including one as a bouncer for a bar. He came to a
greater appreciation of his Catholic faith while doing post-graduate
research on the topic of European history at Queens University Belfast in
Northern Ireland.
You cant divorce European history from the Church, said Father Reid. I was living in a Catholic ghetto, and it
was dangerous, even with the peace process going on. There was a lot of anti-Catholicism and attacks on
Catholics. It was dangerous going to Mass.
A friend challenged Reid to quit playing around with the idea of becoming a priest and actually take the first
steps. The following day, Reid met with a priest to discuss a potential vocation. He encouraged me to pray and
attend daily Mass, said Father Reid. Reid did so, and before long, he attended the Seminary of the Immaculate
Conception in Huntington, N.Y. During his years there, he received RSVP grants as well as the Father McGivney
Scholarship.
Without those, I wouldnt have been able to stay in seminary, said Father Reid. By the time I left, I was
broke.
Father Reid was ordained in 2006 at the age of 37 for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y. He currently serves
as chaplain of Holy Family Council 11227 in Hicksville. And during this Year for Priests, hes thought about what
it means to be a priest and about the challenges facing the Church.
Men arent stepping up to the plate and being men, said Father Reid. Many are being big children.
Father Reid, who spent several years working with juvenile delinquents and youth in crisis, and recognizes their
particular need, went on to say that young people need spiritual fathers who will challenge them.
Youth are lacking people who will tell them no and challenge them to grow up, he said. Many lack a faith
base. Even many of those who attend Catholic school arent attending Mass regularly.
He said that he leans heavily on the Holy Spirit to help him be a spiritual father to his parishioners.
Ive listened to youth, men and women in the sacrament of reconciliation and in counseling, he said. I
probably fail half the time, but when I get it correct, its the Spirit working within me. Half the time I say some-
thing and wonder where that came from.
Yet, despite the challenges, Father Reid wouldnt trade the priesthood for anything.
I love being a priest, he said. I would do it all again. I cant see myself doing anything else. We all look
forward to getting to know Father Reid and working with him for many years to come.

WE CARE - WE SHARE

Dear Sister Columbiettes,

We welcome May with green grass, flowers blooming and trees flowering-thank you Jesus.
Two of our new members moved up to the Major Degree. Congratulations to Tatiana Drawbridge, my granddaughter,
and to Jean Sloan. We welcome you with open arms, and look forward to working with you.
Next on our social calendar, we are hosting our first Friendship Night. Friendship night is a social evening where people from the
major women's Service Organizations in the Patchogue area get together to meet and discuss their various charitable works. The
committee is very excited as it is the first time we have hosted the event and want it all to be perfect! Our theme is "Sowing seeds of
Friendship" and it will be held Wednesday, May 10th from 7-10pm at the Mediterranean Manor. Ronny Pliszak has been doing a
wonderful job chairing the event.
We will be giving four scholarship awards. They are all exceptional students, making their parents and families very proud. We will
announce the students at the next meeting.
A special thank you to all our Brother Knights. You are always there for us, ready to help with all our endeavors, whether it be helping
us set up and break down the room or coming to our events, or just being there for us. Thank you!!
On April 23rd, we had a joint Communion breakfast with our Brother Knights . The food was great and the speaker very inspirational.
May 17th is our election of new officers, in addition we need to elect delegates and alternates to represent us in the other levels of
the organization. Other nominations may also be made from the floor, prior to the actual elections. Only members who are in good
standing and who have been initiated in the two degrees of the Order are eligible to run for office in the Columbiette Auxiliary.
Happy Mother's Day to all. Just like prayers are not for saying just once a year, we can always celebrate, appreciate and honor all our
mothers. They make many sacrifices for our care and well being.

May Birthdays: Lucille Boffo, Nancy Elliot, Marsha Laakmann, Debbie Linbrunner, Rose Marie Lomoggio, Gail Moloney,
