Mathematics Lesson Plan 2

Lesson: Solving Word Problems

Common Core Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to,

taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g.,

by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent

the problem.1

Goal: The student will practice solving word problems

Objectives:

Cognitive Objective- The student will solve fairy tale word problems, solving correctly.

Affective Objective- The student will collaborate with their partners appropriately with a score of

at least 2 on the rubric.

Psychomotor Objective- The student will compose world problems with the class.

Materials:

Read it, draw it, answer it task cards

Dry erase board and markers
Smart Board
Wall poster with problem solving steps.

Before: The students will sit together in a circle on the rug for story time. The teacher will read

The Three Little Pigs by Barbara Brenner. During the story the will incorporate a small word

problem for each house the pig builds and at the end of the story the teacher will write a word

problem on the smartboard for how many times the wolf huffed and puffed. Together as a class

they will solve the word problem. The teacher will review the steps for solving word problems.

The steps for solving problems will be written on a large poster. The steps include: Understand

1. Read the problem. 2. Find the important facts. 3.restate the problem. There are ____bricks.

Solve: Use addition or Subtraction 5+8=13 or 13-8=5. Check Explain your work. (image would

show 5 bricks grouped together, another 5 grouped together, and 3 single bricks to add together

as 13.) After reviewing the steps to solving problems, the students will solve a problem as a

class. The problem will be: If one little pig used 10 sticks, and the other pig used 10 bricks, how

many bricks and sticks were used? The students will follow the process of solving the word

problem together before moving on to partner work.

During: Students will pair up into partners and work together to solve problems. Students will

be given task cards. Each task card has a word problem on it to solve. Each student will work

together by breaking down each word problem and writing it on the Read it, draw it, answer it

task card (shown below) Each group should complete 5 task cards each in 30 minutes. For the

students who complete all of them with time remaining the teacher will give the students the

option to do 1-2 more task cards or walk around to see if other classmates need help and be an

assistant. When the time is up, the teacher will call a group to explain one word problem they

completed and explain how they found their answers. Each task card will be shown on the smart

board and the students will be able to show their work for the class. Once the activity is

completed the teacher will move on to independent activity for the students to complete and

work with any students who needs support.

After: After the partner activity the students will transition to individual work. The teacher will

pass out a worksheet with multiple fairy tale word problems to solve. The students will have 20

minutes to work on individual work after 20 minutes the student can put their work in their

folder to take home for homework.
