Before Reading
Focus: Main idea and key details
Objective/Purpose: Students will be able to
identify the main idea and three key details
from the text by reading excerpts from the
text, correctly identifying them as the main
idea or a detail and verbally explaining their
selections.
CCSS: RL2 Retell stories, including key
details, and demonstrate understanding of
their central message or lesson.
Essential skills: Listen to, read, and discuss
a variety of literary texts (narrative text
structure, both fiction and non-fiction)
representing diverse cultures, perspectives,
and ethnicities; Identify key details in
literary text; and Analyze key details to
determine the central message or lesson in
literary text.
Book Introduction: Do any of you like to
take walks? Where do you like to walk?
Today we are going to read about a Mother
Duck and the walk she decides to take one
day. The skill we are working on today is
finding the main idea. We also want to listen
for details that help us understand what the
main idea of the text is.
Vocabulary: mother, duck, almost, dinner,
little, behind, leaves, grass, getting, worried,
ducklings, wait, sound

Teacher Prompts
- Teacher reminds students that we read to find
the main idea. The details help us figure out
what the main idea is.
- Read title and review book cover.
- Teacher reads page 2 while others point and
follow along.
- Teachers tells students to pay special attention
to page three because we will all read this
phrase together throughout the entire book.
Teacher reads first, then we practice reading it
together. Have each student read page 3
independently to make sure they can.
- Teacher reads page 4. Read page 5 aloud
together. What is Mother Duck looking for?
(her babies/ducklings)
- Teacher reads page 6. Read page 7 aloud
together. Tell me one detail from the story so
far. (she looked behind a rock/looked under the
leaves)

Extending the Meaning:
- Students will read an excerpt from the book. When prompted, they will display main idea or
detail on the sign provided.
Closing: What skills did we practice today? Today we practiced finding the main idea and we talked
about how details can help us find the main idea.
Assessment:
- Summative assessment will be completed today.
- Complete ESL scoring tool.

Activity: Students will read an excerpt from the text (see below).
When prompted they will display the category they believe the
excerpt belongs to using the sign provided. After they display their
answer, we will briefly discuss why they responded the way they
did.

and worried. Where could her ducklings
be?

#2. Mother duck went to look on top of

the high green hill. But she did not see
any of her little ducks there.

#3. Mother Duck said, Where, oh

where, can my little ducks be? Ill have
to go on a walk and see!

#4. There you are, my ducklings!

exclaimed Mother Duck. You must have
been at home the whole time!
