FIAT SEAM
This method 15 sometimes used for knitted garments but more often for
crochet garments. A flat seam may be worked from edtiher Ehe right or the
wrong side of ihe work. Place the 2 pieces of fabric evenly together and sew
stitch by stitch, always bringing the needle up from undcmeath to top
though the centre of the stitch, then in same manner trough correspon-
ding stitch on second piece.
Note Diagram shows knitted fatpric, but method is the same for knitting or
crochet. Always keep work elastic there should be as m ueh stretch In your
scam as Ihtre is in the rest of your garment.

Note - Diagram shows knitted fabric, bul method is the same for knitting or crochet.
Each square on your graph represaits one stitch. It Is a good Idea before beginning to colour In the graph In Ihe colours to be used.
Begin on the left-hand side.
1. Using a tapestry needle or knitters needle, bring Ihe needle from the back through
frw space to the left of the stitch lo be coueredt
* 2. Tak< needle to back through the space to the ri^t of the stitch above the or>e
being covered.
3. Bring needle from back throu^ the space to the left of the next stitch.
*
Repeat from foUowiiig graph for required of stitches (don't puE yam loo
number
t^dy or the work iMO pucker). If you find it difficult to work the stitches loosdy
enoc^, you may prefer to work 2 and 3 as separate operatiems.
Begin second half of row on right-hand side of graphand work back the other way to
complete crosses,
To stop yam from Ewristing and tangling as you work, drop needle at back after every
few stitches and let H ha^ fredy until the yam unwkids.

THE APatons star ratings

TO HELP YOU CHOOSE THE PATTERN
SUITED TO YOUR ABIUTY
One star says this is a beginnet lvel of knitting and aochet. Basic stitches only,
with simple shaping*

Two stars mean easy knitting and crochet, with some fancy patterns such as
shells, mesh, simple 2 colour patterns and cables*

Three advanced knitters and crochet workers, requiring some

stars are for
specialised knowledge such as Fair Isle, Aran and more complicated lace patterns*

Four challenge. There can be make-and-lose patterns, complicated

stars signal a
shaping, and any technique that requires a higher level of concentration.

The letter P after any star grouping suggests that an additional degree of patience is

required for a quality finish.
