Keywords: attitudes, representation, homosexuality, sexism, LGBT+, media, history

This lists were the ones that actually brought information that I needed for my research. I

needed to change the order of the words to get the most vary information. The big topic of my

paper requires the historical background of the different types of isms that corrupt the nations,

especially within the United States. However, the databases did not provide the desired

information about minority representation in media, specifically literature. These words were the

best ones that provide the historical insight on the topics necessary.

Synthesis:

All these resources connect with one another and help develop an argument that can be

developed into answering the initial question: How has history influence the representation of

minorities in media? Some of resources do not contribute necessary information that would be
required in the writing process. One of the resources states a comment about knowing a

homosexual will change the belief about them (Altemeyer, 2002, 63-75). This statement made

me cringe on the excuse people will use to defend their actions against homosexuals. I have seen

and heard people use this excuse about their lack of accepting the lifestyle of other peoples.

The remarks can make people be exploited for being different and not fully accepted for their

preference of genders. The lack of people acknowledging that everyday they interact with a

queer person, makes them ignorant of the societys norms. Heterosexuals view their sexuality as

a norm through societys lack of acceptance in queers and exposure to such broad frame of

sexualities. In the video, Get Educated about Homosexuality, explicitly explains about the

biological aspects of homosexuality and the existence outside the human race. This is something

many people tend to forget when they try to argue about homosexuals choosing their lifestyle.

Most of the arguments tend to fall between the bible and environmental influences. With

minimum scientific facts about homophobia, the psychological aspect explains that people tend

to repress these homosexual urges due to their Oedipus complex (Herek, 1984). This topic can

go on for ages, especially how I feel about it due to my own personal experiences. All I can

understand through these articles where the fact that people are not fully expose to this in the

media. The media becomes a powerful tool to educate people through different forms. Literature

holds one big power since it is a commonly used within schools. This could be use to expose

children and young adults about the different social issues occurring at the current time

(McGrail, & Rieger, 2016).
