Subject/Grade: US History II, 7th Grade Unit Topic: Industrial Revolution

Learning Goals

Understanding Goals: Students will understand that inventions developed during the Industrial Revolution
significantly impacted America as a whole.

Knowledge Goals: Students will know the characteristics (including who invented it, when, its function, and its
overall impact) of the following inventions:
Telephone Model T
Lightbulb Electricity
Airplane Steel

Skill Goals: Students will be able to analyze the impact of inventions during the Industrial Revolution.
Students will be able to justify opinions with support from historical evidence.

Type of Activity: Transfer Activity: After discussing inventions within our Industrial Revolution unit, students will
use this activity as a way to apply their knowledge about inventions to understanding the impact they had on
society.

Directions:
1. Read the following tasks and choose one that seems the most interesting to you.
2. After choosing a task, read the task card for more instructions.
3. Complete the task individually, using sources weve discussed or reviewed in class.
4. Be sure to check your facts with information from the textbook or your INB.
5. Finally, use the rubric to ensure you have completed all aspects of the assignment.
6. We will share these projects in small groups.

Resources: Students will keep an Interactive Notebook throughout the year. Worksheets, activities and notes
will be in this INB. Students are able to use this as a source for the Tri-Mind activity. The unit will include the use
of primary and secondary sources, which students will refer to in their assignment. In addition, we have
textbooks in the classroom for more in depth content and students may use these for more information. Images
can be downloaded from google images but must be approved by the teacher before included in the final
project.

Wrap-Up: After each student has completed their selected activity, we will organize in small groups to share.
Groups will be determined by the teacher after seeing how many students selected each activity. Some groups
may have two of the same activities, others may have all different. The teacher will group students of all levels
and interests together in order to ensure differing opinions and ideas during discussion. Students will have time
to share their final products. After, students will have the opportunity to share with the entire class the inventions
they found most impactful and why. We will end class with this discussion, showing that each invention made an
impact on society, and inventions are still doing that in our world today.

Task Cards

List-Maker Begin by creating a pro-con list for the two inventions of your choosing. This list should
have at least 3 pros and 3 cons for each invention. Next, select the invention you
believe had the greatest influence or impact on society. Remember, this impact can be
positive or negative. You will then write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) about why
this invention was so impactful using evidence from sources from class. Also, be sure
to explain what the invention is, who invented it, and when.

Todays Consumer You will create a PowerPoint to show how inventions are still present in todays
society, and specifically in your life. Select 3 inventions from the Industrial Revolution
that you believe are the most important based on your experience with them today. Do
you use or see this invention at school, at home, or other places in your life? You will
also need to include how the inventions are different or improved from the first
versions we discussed in class. Use images to show changes in the invention, and use
information about the invention to explain what it is, who invented it and when. Include
at least two sentences per invention describing its impact on society today and in the
past.

Sales Specialist You will write a script for a commercial advertising the most important invention from
the Industrial Revolution. Your audience will be people looking to live in a big city
during the late 1800s, or early 1900s. Your goal is to share with the audience how this
invention will make their lives so much better in the big city. Use information about the
invention to explain what it is, who invented it and when. Make sure to select 2 more
inventions you believe are less impactful and make an argument to the viewer why
they are not as good. The script should be at least 15 lines of either conversation or
monologue, and must include evidence from sources discussed in class.
