FUN IN THE SUN MAKING BUTTERFLY
GARDEN FEEDERS
A
Aprils Wildlife Watch was a fantastic success
with a record number of families turning up to
help make buttery feeders. We were pleased
to see so many new faces. The weather was
glorious so we were able to sit on the sun deck overlooking stunning
views of the bay as we got creative. The aim was to make the feeder as
bright and colourful as possible to look extra attractive to our butteries.
Everyone rose to the challenge spectacularly the nished products
looked great!
There was also a quick demonstration of our moth trap that we use for
long term monitoring of moth species here at Dale Fort. We also had a
look at some of the moths we caught the previous evening.

Overall, everyone had a lovely time in the sun, while learning all about
moths and butteries. We hope the feeders will attract many beautiful
butteries in your gardens!

Join us next month at the Fort on Saturday 13th May 2pm-4pm for some
exciting small mammal trapping. We will be learning about the kinds of
mammals we might nd in the Dale Fort grounds and will be setting up
traps to see what we catch. Hope to see you there!

For more information about the group or next months activity, visit the
Dale Fort Wildlife Watch page on www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/watchgroups/

KNOT IN THE HAVENS!
The National Parks have advised that JAPANESE KNOTWEED is
spreading around the Havens a major source of the spread is the
dumping of Garden Waste in green areas of the Havens. Gardeners
may unwittingly spread the Japanese Knotweed by dumping apparently
harmless garden waste over the hedge said a source.

Whats the Law?

Gardeners are breaking the law by dumping grass clippings, hedge
trimmings, weeds and leaves...it is y-tipping and it is illegal and offenders
can be prosecuted!

I have garden waste to dispose of but do not want to sign up to the

Council collection service - what can I do with it?
You can:
Use a home compost bin - these can be provided free of charge if you
need one. Please call 01437 764551 for more details.
Take your garden waste to your closest Civic Amenity and Recycling
Centre, where you can dispose of it free of charge and ensure it is turned
into compost.

What is the Council Collection Service?

Pembrokeshire County Council is once again offering fortnightly
(subscription only) garden waste collections using wheeled bins.
The service will operate fortnightly from 27th February 2017 until 1st
December 2017 inclusive.
The cost per subscription for 2017 is 48, however for an online customer
they are offering a reduced rate of 43 per subscription.
The garden waste will be taken for composting which is a more
environmentally friendly way of disposing of it, than sending it to be buried
at a landll site.
Benets of using our garden waste collection service:
Your garden waste is converted into compost and not sent to landll.
Helps keep your garden tidy.
Its convenient and easy to use.
Offers good value for money.

BROAD AND LITTLE HAVEN W.I

Little Haven and Broad Haven WI had an outing to the Lovespooon gallery
in Kilgetty in April. There was a very interesting talk and demonstration of
the history of the lovespoon and exactly how they are made. There was
a huge selection of different types on sale and engraving could be done
on the spot and free of charge. Afterwards the group had afternoon tea at
Bramleys Tearooms.

The next meeting will be an open meeting, which means that it is open to
anyone even the menfolk! so please come along. It will take place in
Broad Haven Village Hall on 9 May when Ian Farmer will bring a selection
of hawks and to demonstrate . It promises to
be very entertaining. As always there will be,
coffee and cake afterwards. If you would like
to come along and see what we are about,
you are assured of a warm welcome.

QUIZ : ROCKS AND STONES ANSWERS

1. Salt ; mined in Britain from extensive underground workings at Nantwich

Chesire.
2. In the hedge on the right approaching the white railings bend before
Porteld Gate. Apparently Martin Davey stole a sheep from Haverfordwest
market carrying it around his neck, legs tied, weary from too much drink
he fell asleep against the stone and th e weight of the animal throttled him.
3. A large boulder that easily rocks (log : dialect : to rock). Camden (1695)
described the largest Rocking Stone to be situated on a clifftop half a mile
from St Davids, so huge it exceeded the draught of one hundred oxen and
could be rocked with one nger. It was destroyed by Cromwells men as it
was a source of superstition.
4. Tautology is the unnecessary repetition of the same thing in different
words. Stack is Old Norse meaning a rock in the sea.
5. Elegug is Welsh for Guillemot which in the spring congregate here in
their thousands.
6. Roch Castle where the owner, Adam de Rupe (latin : rock), was warned
that he would die within a year from the bite of a viper. He spent the year
in the topmost room of the castle and his last night was so cold he ordered
some rewood to be brought. Hidden in the kindling was a snake. He was
found dead the next morning.
7. The Smalls where in 1800 one of the keepers died on duty, his partner
hung him from the balcony to preserve his body, but his eerie presence
and movement in the wind sent him mad.
